Rifled musket ( Eng. Rifled musket ) - a type of firearm created in the middle of the XIX century. Initially, this term applied only to those muskets, which were originally produced as a smooth-bore weapon, and then they had been replaced with rifled barrels. Later this name was assigned to those rifles that had the same design as a whole, like a smooth-bore musket.
Use
Rifled muskets, such as the Springfield Model 1861 , were widely used in the American Civil War . The British Pattern 1853 Enfield was the most widely used in the war in the troops of the Confederation , and the American Springfield arr. 1861 in parts of the federal army [1] .
Pattern 1853 Enfield was actively used by the British army in the Crimean War , thanks to which the British had a clear advantage over the Russians, armed with smooth-bore guns.
However, rifled muskets were not always effective. Thus, in the Austro-Italian-French War of 1859 , French troops defeated Austrians armed with rifle muskets during fast bayonet attacks [2] .
