Biography

Doge's son, Pietro Durazzo and Violanta Garbarino, was born in Genoa in 1635 . He was baptized in the church of Santa Sabina on November 5 of the same year.

Together with his brother, Cesare was educated at the College of Milan , and also attended the military academy. Military education subsequently allowed Stefano to work for about 43 years as a magistrate of war, and then as a magistrate of mercy. At the same time, he and his brother Cesare participated in the management of family assets related to the production and trade of silk. Thanks to trade relations, he also served in the magistrate of silk in 1731-1734.

On February 3, 1734, by an overwhelming majority of votes (380 out of 500) of the members of the Great Council, Durazzo was elected the new Doge, 152nd in the history of Genoa, becoming simultaneously king of Corsica. On May 8, his solemn coronation took place in the Cathedral of St. Lawrence.

Board and recent years

During his mandate, like his predecessors, Durazzo had to face and somehow try to stabilize the rebellion of the inhabitants of Corsica. Despite the usual line of using strong-arm tactics against the rebels, the Doge sent two senators to the island - Hugo Fieschi and Pietro Maria Giustiniani - who announced an amnesty and reconciliation program. However, the “peace mission” did not succeed, and soon the Doge sent to the island of Felice Pinelli, a hardliner.

After the expiration of the mandate on February 3, 1736, Durazzo continued to serve in various positions: the president of the magistrate of war (1737; 1741; 1743) and the state inquisitor (1738, 1740, 1742).

He died in Genoa on January 24, 1744 . His body was buried in the Church of Consolation.

Personal life

From a marriage with Benedettina Durazzo (February 13, 1713) had five children: Pietro Francesco (1717); Nicolo Francesco (1719, Jesuit); Cesare Lorenzo (1720); Violante (1722, wife of Giacomo Antonio Balbi); Maria Aurelia (1725, wife of Giacomo Filippo Caregi).
