Born April 3, 1952 in Port Talbot .
In 1974, he received a Bachelor of Arts in History with honors from Cambridge University ( Clare College ) in the Department of Anglo-Saxon, Northern and Celtic Studies with a specialization in history, Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian and Celtic studies. [one]
In 1977 - 1980, he was a research associate of Sir Leon Radzinovich on the Oxford-Cambridge project to study the history of English criminal law 1790-1914. [one]
In 1978, he received a Master of Arts in History and a Ph.D. in History (supervisor - Sir John Harold Plumb ) at Cambridge University . [one]
