The authors of the song are Doc Pomus and Mort Schumann . It was the first song they wrote that Elvis Presley released. Since it began their cooperation with Presley. (Although before that, the very first song they had written for him was Turn Me Loose, Presley rejected.) Then throughout the 1960s Pomus and Schumann became the most stable suppliers of new songs for the singer [1] .
The song came out on the B side of the single “ It's Now or Never ” in 1960 and thus was part of Elvis Presley’s attempts to return to the top of popularity ( comeback ) after returning from the army [1] .
In the US, the song “A Mess of Blues” became a hit, but a small one [1] . (In the USA in 1960, in Billboard magazine, the song “A Mess of Blues” performed by Elvis Presley reached 32 in the Hot 100 chart . [2] While the A side of the same single, “It's Now or Never” went up in Hot 100 for 1 place.)
But in the UK “A Mess of Blues” was released as a separate single [3] (on whose side B was the song “The Girl of My Best Friend”).
And in the UK, the song “A Mess of Blues” got to the 2nd place in the national singles chart ( UK Singles Chart ) [1] .

Description
According to Bob Mer for the Memphis daily newspaper , this is a “rumbling”, “with sand” rhythm and blues number, in which Elvis regains some of his bad reputation in the 1950s. He also notes that the song was “in a pleasant contradiction with a decidedly melodramatic priest on the side A” [1] (meaning how it was published on an American single, with the song “ It's Now or Never ” on the side A).
Recognition
In 2015, the journalist of the Memphis daily newspaper Chris Chris Herrington in his list of the 50 best songs of Elvis Presley put the song "A Mess of Blues" in 22nd place [1] .
