Biography
Sofia Gavrilova was born in 1987 in Moscow [1] .
In 2004-2009, she studied at the Faculty of Geography of MV Lomonosov Moscow State University , graduated from the Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics . Coursework and thesis was carried out under the leadership of Tatyana Glazovskaya . As a thesis, the existing course on aeromethods in avalanche science was updated - the latest remote sensing data and methods for their processing were introduced. During her studies at the university, she took part in works with Professor Judy Plow ( Oxford , UK ) on mapping the penitentiary system of the USSR and Russia (www.gulagmaps.org). She also participated in avalanche hazard assessments in the Krkonoše nature reserve ( Czech Republic ), in studies of the Valley of Geysers after a catastrophic mudflow, etc. [1] [2]
After graduation, she entered the full-time postgraduate study of the research laboratory of snow avalanches and mudflows of the geographical faculty of Moscow State University [1] [2] . In 2013, she defended her thesis for the degree of candidate of geographical sciences on the topic "Mapping of natural emergencies in Russia" under the leadership of Tatyana Glazovskaya. Opponents of the defense were Alexei Chumachenko and Anatoly Yelchaninov [3] . He receives the Ph.D. Degree in Oxford [4] .
Scientific and teaching activities
Research interests: methods of mapping emergency situations of a natural nature [2] . The author of the training course "Geoinformation technologies in glaciology and cryolithology" (2010) [3] . Since 2010, she taught the course “Geoinformation methods of research in glaciology and cryolithology” at the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University named after MV Lomonosov , since 2011 she taught the course “Methods of spatial analysis” at the Higher School of Urban Studies of the Higher School of Economics [2] . In 2012, she taught the course “Geoinformation Technologies in Glaciology and Cryolithology” at the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University [3] .
Photography
Sofia Gavrilova works with photography and installations. In 2012, she graduated from the Rodchenko Moscow School of Photography and Multimedia (workshop of Vladislav Efimov ). She took part in many group exhibitions in Russia and abroad [1] [5] .
The main theme in photography is territories and their perception. Supervises photo projects [6] . Member of the Department of Research Arts project, which brings together artists, photographers, geographers, anthropologists, sociologists, architects and urbanists. The main mission of the project is “to explore modern anthropological and geographical processes taking place in Russia, using modern art practices” [4] . Gavrilova herself spoke about the project:
| Our studies are aimed at studying issues that are clearly ripe in society, but have not received well-formulated, politically neutral answers. A number of systemic features of Russian science and the lack of tools to popularize knowledge have led many thinking artists and photographers to search for territories and the people living in them, realizing that reality is clearly different from the picture that we see in the news [4] . |
