Biography
Born in the town of Stashkov (on the border with modern Czech Republic and not far from the border with Poland). The family had 12 children, seven of whom became actors. Josef Kroner started as a laborer in Trencin , later became the head of the workshop in the town of Povazzsk-Bistrica . At the same time he played in an amateur theater. Never professionally studied acting. The start of his acting career was laid in the Chamber Army Theater in the city of Martin ( 1948 - 1956 , until 1950 the city was called Turchansky Saints Martin). From 1956 until his retirement in 1984, Joseph Kroner played on the Drama Stage of the Slovak National Theater in Bratislava. He made his film debut in 1949 as the master Joseph in the film Skatka directed by Jan Kadar. He starred in more than 50 films and series, such as Kubo / Kubo (1965), Live Whip / Živý bič (1966), Red-haired Chick / Rysavá jalovica (1970), Roses and Snow / Ruže a sneh , The Smell of a Craft / Vôňa remesla , Slovácko sa nesudí (1978, 1984), Swako Ragan / Sváko Ragan (1975), Long live grandfather / Nech žije deduško (1978), as well as in the Oscar-winning film directed by Jan Kadar and Elmar Klos “Shop on the Square” (1965); thanks to this role, Joseph Kroner gained international recognition: the work of Joseph Kroner and Ida Kaminsky in this film were noted at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival. In 1970, Joseph Kroner was awarded the prize of the Festival of Workers of Czechoslovakia as the best actor. Since 1973, he also starred in Hungarian films, including in the Hungarian film directed by Gyula Maar “The End of the Road”. In 1982, he played a major role in the film produced by Czechoslovakia-Germany-Austria "Millennial Bee."
About his life and work in 1987, the director Fero Fenich shot the television movie "The Way of Joseph Kroner" / Trate Jozefa Kronera. In 1989, Joseph Kroner was nominated for the European Film Academy Award for Best Actor in the Bulgarian film "You Who Live in Heaven."
He died in 1998, not having lived a few days before his 74th birthday.
According to the results of a vote by Slovak film reporters in the 2000 Questionnaire, Josef Kroner was named "Slovak actor of the 20th century." He is the author of the books “ Actor on a fishing rod” (1970), “ Actor not only on a fishing rod” (1974), “ With a camera and a fishing rod” (1979), “ An Unusual Testament ” (1982) and “ About the Fish Ukleyka” (1983). Hobbies: fishing and picking mushrooms.
His brother - actor Ludovit Kroner (1925-2000), daughter - actress Zuzana Kronerova (born in 1952), wife - actress Teresa Gurbanova-Kronerova (1924-1999), nephew - actor Jan Kroner (1927-1986) .
Since 2001, the Joseph Kroner Foundation has been awarding the Joseph Kroner Prize every year since 2001.
