Biography

Childhood and adolescence

Islam Safarli was born on February 12, 1923 in the village of Shakerabad near the city of Nakhichevan (now on the territory of the Babek district of the Nakhichevan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan ) [1] in a peasant family [2] . By nationality - Azerbaijani [3] . Interest in literature and the desire to write poetry manifested in Safarli in childhood. As a high school student, Islam Safarli began to print in the district newspaper [1] (since 1940 ) [2] . After Safarli graduated from a 10-grade secondary school, the Great Patriotic War began and Safarli went to the front [1] .

War

During the war, Islam Safarli served in intelligence. In the Red Army from March 11, 1942 . Since November 1942, he fought in the North Caucasus and the 4th Ukrainian Front [3] . Took part in the battles for Grozny , Rostov-on-Don , Taganrog [1] . He served in the 77th Infantry Division [3] . Under Melitopol, Safarli was seriously wounded and spent a month and a half in a hospital, after which he returned to the front [1] .

Safarli participated in the liberation of Ukraine and the Crimea , was shipped through the Sivash , took part in the storming of Sapun Mountain . These events were subsequently reflected in poems and poems of the poet [1] . Since 1943, Safarli was a candidate member of the VKP (b) [4] .

On the morning of November 27, 1943, in the Gornostaevsky district, a detachment that included the foreman of the Islam Safarli group was ordered to capture prisoners. Having gotten under heavy fire to the enemy's dugout discovered, Safarli and intelligence officer Zhuravlev, firing, forced the Germans into a dugout. Then, throwing a dugout with grenades, broke into it and captured the remaining 3 Germans. For this feat Safarli December 6, 1943 was awarded the Order of Glory III degree [4] .

On January 1, 1944, in the area of ​​heights to the north of the village of Lopatki, Gornostaevsky District, a reconnaissance group, which included an assistant platoon commander of the 3rd Separate Reconnaissance Company of the 77th Red Banner Rifle Division, Sergeant-Major Safarli took part in the capture of a control prisoner. The operation, in the course of which, the scouts, secretly sneaking up to the trenches of the enemy, opened fire on neighboring German trenches (in order to cover an exciting group) and ended successfully. The "language" was delivered to the unit. Islam Safarli personally destroyed four German soldiers. For this feat Safarli January 21, 1944 was awarded the medal "For Courage" [3] . In the same year, Safarli joined the VKP (b) [2] .

In the Baltics , under Shaulyaem , Islam Safarli received a serious shrapnel wound and was transferred to a hospital in the Moscow region , where he celebrated Victory Day [1] .

In addition to the Order of Glory and the Medal "For Courage", Safarli was awarded the medals "For the Defense of the Caucasus" , "For Victory over Germany" , "XX Years of Victory" , "For Valiant Labor in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945" and "For Labor difference ” [1] .

Returning to his homeland, Islam Safarli entered the journalism department of the philological faculty of Azerbaijan State University , and graduated in 1951 [2] . After graduating from the university, he worked as a journalist in the publications “ Sharg Gapysy ”, “Youth of Azerbaijan” and “ Literary Gazette " [1] .

From 1953 to 1959 he was an editor at the State Radio, the head of literary and dramatic programs. In 1960-1973 Safarli served as a consultant to the Writers' Union of Azerbaijan on drama and poetry, led the drama section. Also assisted novice authors [1] .

In 1973 he received the title of Honored Artist of the Azerbaijan SSR [2] .

Islam Safarli died on November 6, 1974 after a long illness. He was buried on the II Alley of Honor in Baku [1] .

Creativity

Islam Safarli actively worked for more than thirty years. He wrote many poems, plays, poems, dramatic works, essays, short stories, librettos, screenplays, translated works of Russian and Turkish writers into the Azerbaijani language [1] .

As a student of the journalism department of the philological faculty of the Azerbaijan State University, Safarli published his first play, Good and Evil (1948) based on the poem Nizami Ganjavi and Nizami [2] and the book Song about Mingechaur (1950) [1] .

One of the first collections of Safarli were "Whisper, Waves" (1956), "Breath of Life", "Two Willows" and many others [1] . In the collections of poems “The Song of Mingechauri”, “Whisper, Waves” and others. Safarli writes about the labor of workers, collective farmers, intellectuals [2] .

Poems "Loyalty to our army", "Literary youth", "Thirteenth", "Be sure, father!", "Steam willow" are devoted to the Great Patriotic War. And his work "Fresh Flowers" - twice to the hero of the Soviet Union, Major General Azi Aslanov . Publisher "Soviet Writer" published in Russian the book "Song of the Eternal" Safarli [1] .

The poet's works were also devoted to Caspian oilmen, cotton growers and winegrowers, plowmen and shepherds. Poems about the nature of Azerbaijan - "Spring Batabat", "What would still have left to wish" [1] .

Among the plays and poems written by Islam Safarli are “Eye Doctor” (1955), “Memorable Gift” (1956), “Mother's Heart” (1960), “Legend of Dadagyunash” (1964), “Our Lighthouse” (1961) , “What should I do?” (1962), “Crossroads”, etc. They are devoted to Islam Safarli’s contemporaries - doctors, geologists, students, etc. The main theme of such his works is the desire to find his place in life [1] .

In 1972, Safarli wrote the play “At the Crossroads” about the modern Azerbaijani village [2] .

Based on the works of Safarli, performances were staged in Baku and Nakhichevan, films and television performances were shot, among which “The Stars Do Not Extinguish” (1971), in which the poet’s poems also sound) and “The Eye Doctor” (1985) [1] .

Memory

  • The street in the center of Baku (formerly Mashadi Azizbayov, formerly Lantern and Vorontsovskaya) is named after Islam Safarli.
  • A monument to the poet has been erected over the grave of Safarli on the Alley of Honor in Baku.
  • In 2013, a postage stamp of Azerbaijan dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Islam Safarli was issued.
