After the death of their little son, Shawn, wife Jesse ( Kate Bosworth ) and Mark ( Thomas Jane ) Hobson adopt the boy Cody ( Jacob Trembble ), whose mother died long ago, some of the previous adoptive parents disappeared, and in the last adoptive family, the mother first died, and then father went mad.

Soon, Jesse and Mark realize that when Cody sleeps, his dreams become reality: Cody likes to look at albums with butterflies, and in one of the first nights they see colorful butterflies in the room, which disappear when Cody wakes up. Cody sees on one of the photos of Sean and asks who it is. The next night, Sean appears, and Jesse has time to hug him before he disappears when Cody wakes up. Then Jesse shows Cody a family video archive where Sean was shot, prompting Cody to have another dream about Sean the next night. Mark asks Jesse not to use Cody in this way. At the same time, Cody tries to stay awake at night, telling Jesse that when he sleeps, a monster often comes to him, Krakmen, who once ate his mother.

At school, one of the boys offends Cody, breaking his jar of a butterfly. Cody, who did not sleep at night, falls asleep after a lesson in an empty classroom, where the offender comes. A monster from Cody's dreams appears and pounces on the boy, eating him. The teachers decide that the boy ran away from school.

For Cody to have a dream about Shawn again, Jessie gives him a sleeping pill, not knowing that Cody was chasing a nightmare in the dream. At night, Jesse prepares to see Shawn, but a skeletal Kanker-man appears. Mark tries to wake Cody, but Kanker-man attacks him and swallows. Jesse loses consciousness, and in the morning the police take Cody from her for illegally pumping him with sleeping pills. Cody is temporarily placed in a shelter. Meanwhile, Jesse steals a private file from Cody in the custody service and learns about the fate of his previous foster parents. She speaks with Whelan, who is in a lunatic asylum, and he tells her that the monster from the dreams appeared when his wife fell ill. Jesse also finds Andrea, Cody's dead mother, in the hospital archives.

At night, Jesse arrives at the shelter where Cody is kept. The boy, who was trying to stay awake for two days, was given a soporific injection. Jesse sees that the walls of the building are entangled with plants, and butterflies are flying along the corridors. In the rooms she sees ghosts, including her husband. When she walks over to the room where Cody sleeps, Kanker Man runs onto her. But she shows him a blue rag butterfly, Cody's favorite toy in infancy, which she found in his mother's things. The monster stops and Jesse hugs him. Kanker-man shrinks and takes on the look of Cody himself, and then disappears. Jess takes the sleeping Cody home.

In the epilogue, Jess tells Cody that his mother Andrea loved him very much, but fell ill with cancer and died when he was very young. The image of the sick mother and the name of her disease ( cancer ) were transformed in Cody's mind into a monster, Kanker-maine, which came when he was ill. But Jesse says that Cody can learn how to manage his gift himself, and maybe one day Whelan's wife will return to him, the bully boy from school will wake up at home in his bed, and Mark will meet his son Sean.

Filming began on November 11, 2013, in Fairhope, Alabama. ^[3] . On December 12, 2013, the team filmed the scene at Burton Academy ^[4] . Filming completed December 16, 2013 ^[5] .

On September 7, 2013, it was announced that Oculus director Mike Flanegan was directed to direct a horror film called Somnie, he co-authored with Jeff Howard for Intrepid Pictures. The producers will be Trevor Macy and William D. Johnson. Demarest Films' Sam Englbardt will co-produce and co-finance the film with MICA Entertainment ^[6] . Focus Features International was originally engaged in international film sales. On April 4, 2014, Relativity Media acquired the rights to distribute the film in the United States ^[7] . In March 2015, the name was changed to Before I Wake.

On April 4, 2014, Relativity Media acquired the distribution rights for the film ^[8] . The film was originally scheduled for release on May 8, 2015, but was postponed to September 25, 2015, and was withdrawn from the planned expense of the company in bankruptcy proceedings ^[9] . The film was again scheduled for April 8, 2016 ^[10] .
