According to Appian, Regulus made a mistake when, approaching the enemy after a day march, held in hot weather, he immediately sent his tired people into battle. The Roman cavalry was easily defeated, and the infantry at first was able to squeeze the Carthaginian mercenaries, but was surrounded, was attacked by elephants and almost completely destroyed. Only two thousand Romans were able to break into Klopeia; 500 people were captured, and among them was Mark Atilius.
