History
On March 26 ( April 8 ), 1913, the Zemsky Provincial Assembly decided: “To erect a stone one-story building for the exemplary school and especially a stone church at the Grigorov Teacher’s Seminary in memory of the 300th anniversary of the Romanov Royal House . ”
In the autumn of 1913, the construction of the church began according to the project of K.K. Romanov , a well-known researcher of ancient Russian architecture, with later amendments to the Novgorod engineer R.R. Ergle.
On August 4 (17), 1915 , after the completion of the main construction works, a ceremonial raising of the bells took place. A record of the construction of the church is available in the clerical sheet of the Lazarevsky church, assigned to the Zverin-Pokrovsky monastery .
On January 9 (22), 1916, the church that was built was consecrated in the name of the holy noble Grand Duke Alexander Nevsky . The rector of the church from the very beginning until the closing was the priest Alexander Ilyinsky, who taught the Law of God and Church Slavonic in a teacher’s seminary .
On July 31, 1930 the Temple was liquidated, and in 1931 the church building was transferred to the Grigorov State Farm and was used as a club of the veterinary college.
During the Great Patriotic War, during the occupation, the church building housed the garage for cars of the Spanish Blue Division , and the belfry served as a tower on which machine guns were installed.
In the first weeks after the liberation of Novgorod from Nazi troops, a temporary hospital was established in the church. After the war, a church was located in the church, then a warehouse.
On February 17, 1999, by a resolution of the City Administration, Alexander Nevsky Church was included in the list of objects to be restored for the celebration of the 1140th anniversary of Veliky Novgorod.
On December 19, 1999, the Archbishop of Novgorod and Starorussky Leo consecrated the revived church.
On March 13, 2016, the Metropolitan of Novgorod and Starorussky Leo performed the rite of consecration of bells in the church of St. Prince Alexander Nevsky. The consecration of the bells was dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the temple. And on April 8, the bells were raised to the belfry of the temple.
Architecture
The Church of St. Alexander Nevsky is a pillarless single - headed one- apical quadrangle with a plucking finish of the facades , with a rectangular belfry above the narthex in plan. The material of the walls is brick.

The iconostasis of the church consists of four tiers.
Bottom Row (Chin) - Local
It contains the Royal Gates with the image on the two wings of the Annunciation and four evangelists . The royal gates are framed by the image of the saints, and on top of the icon of the Eucharist is the Communion of the Apostles by Christ. To the right of the Royal Doors is the icon of the Savior "The Savior on the Throne", to the left - the icon of the Mother of God "Pantanassa". To the right of the Savior’s icon is the temple icon - the belt icon of Alexander Nevsky. The deacon’s doors depict the archangels Gabriel and Michael . To the left of the iconostasis of the Mother of God are the icon of Varlaam of Khutyn and Sergius of Radonezh and the icon of the royal sufferers . To the right of the icon of Alexander Nevsky, is the icon of all Novgorod Saints .
Second Row - Deesis
