Biography
Antonio Duarte Gomes Leal was born on June 6, 1848 in the capital of Portugal, Lisbon .
Gomes Leal was an ardent supporter of positivism and was one of the most important representatives of the liberation movement in Portugal. For his poem “ A traição, carta a el rei D. Luiz ” (published in 1881), he was sentenced by the court to imprisonment [1] .
Of the writer's numerous works, the most famous are: “A canalha” (1873); Tribute de sangro (1873); Claridades do sul (1875), Hereje, carta à rainha (1881); "O Renegado" (1881); História de Jesus (188-4); “About Ante-Christo” (1884): “About the Processo de Jesus”; “Poesia da sciência”; “Poesia do extraordinário”; "A Órgia"; Troça à Inglaterra (1891) [1] .
His inspired works, partly related in spirit to the works of Herr Junqueiro , are distinguished, according to some literary critics, by their great strength and revolutionary moods [1] .
He died on January 29, 1921 in his hometown.
In 1933, one of the streets of Peña de France was named after him.
