Daken (Marvel Comics)

Daken first appeared in Wolverine: Origins # 10 (March 2007). He becomes a member of the Dark Avengers , as part of the Dark Reign , using his father's alter-ego ^[2] . The character also played a key role in the Wolverine series, which since # 75 has been renamed Dark Wolverine ^{[3] [4]} . Screenwriter Brian Michael Bendis praised Daken’s introduction to Wolverine: Origins .

As part of the team, he was also part of the Dark Avengers / Uncanny X-Men: Utopia crossover ^[5] . As a minor character, he appeared in the Dark Avengers limited edition, starting with # 1 (March, 2009) up to # 16 (June 2010).

The publication of Dark Wolverine continued after the end of Dark Reign and ended in # 90 with the prelude for the Empire storyline, which continued in a new series of Daken: Dark Wolverine . Starting from # 9.1, the script writer of the series was Rob Williams ^{[6] [7]} .

In November 2011, it was announced the closure of the Daken: Dark Wolverine series, ^[8] which ended in # 23.

Sexual orientation

Daken was shown as a bisexual , experiencing sexual desire for both women and men. In Wolverine: Origins # 11, he kissed a man, but then it turned out that all this time he had a romantic relationship with a woman, and also killed the mentioned man ^[9] . In Dark Wolverine # 75, Daken had sexual contact with one of the employees of Norman Osborne , which was done in order to gain access to classified files ^[10] . In the same issue, he suggested that McGargan spend the night together, and also seduced M. OL. O.T.a. In Dark Avengers # 7, Daken jokingly noted that he liked to play for both teams, implying his bisexual orientation and membership in the Dark Avengers and the Dark X-Men ^[11] . In Dark Wolverine # 76, in a battle with the Creature , Daken exorcised him with the help of homoerotic remarks ^[12] . Before the beginning of the siege, he flirted with Marked in the Falcon eye costume, ^[13] and then kissed him altogether ^[14] . In Dark Reign: Young Avengers # 5, Daken tried to use his pheromones against Halking, the homosexual superhero ^[15] . However, heterosexual behavior was often noticed behind Daken when he spent the night with various women ^[9] .

In 2009, at San Diego Comic-Con International, Marjorie Liu commented on Daken’s sexual propensity: “Daken will do anything to achieve her goals.” Daniel Wei added that Daken’s sexuality is an integral part of his personality: “He is nothing more than a homosexual, he is heterosexual. This is about his control. ” ^[16] In an interview with Newsarama in 2010, Marjorie Liu confirmed Daken’s bisexuality ^{[17] [18]} .

Early years

Akihiro was the son of Wolverine and his Japanese wife, Itsu. In 1946, Itsu, being in the last week of pregnancy, was killed by the Winter Soldier , in an attempt to attract Logan’s attention and force him to return to Mandripur. After death, Itsu, Romulus , wearing a long coat to hide his identity, cut the child out of his mother’s womb and left her body behind. The child was able to survive such injuries due to the healing factor inherited from the father ^[19] .

Romulus left the child on the doorstep of the young and rich couple of Akihira and Natsumi. They perceived the appearance of a child as an answer to their prayers, and therefore raised him as their own. Although the boy was named Akihiro, in honor of his father, the servants in the house and the rest of the provincial families gave him the name Daken (犬 соб “dog geek”), referring to his ignoble origin. While the child was growing up, he was often teased by other children from the village. The rude attitude of others led to changes in the character of Akihiro, who became cold and insensitive to everyone except his father ^[20] .

One night, Natsumi recognized Akihira that she never loved their adopted son and that after many years of unsuccessful attempts, she finally managed to get pregnant. Akihiro overheard the conversation of the parents and began to plot. In 1957, he told his mother that he had killed her child. Akihira was furious and disowned Akihiro as a son, to which he replied that "Akihiro was never his real name." Natsumi tried to kill the primus, which led to the awakening of Daken's abilities. He pierced his mother with bone claws. Unable to kill his son, Akihira committed suicide. Then Romulus appeared, who told Daken that in the future he would become like him ^[20] .

Romulus sent Daken to a training camp in Canada, where Wolverine himself had been trained, more than forty years ago. Akihiro also coached the same instructor, Silas Burr, who later became the famous mercenary Cyber. Burr coached Daken for two years until he disappeared. While the two groups were searching for Akihiro, he, on the orders of Romulus, returned to the camp and killed every man before colliding with Burr. During the fight, Daken demonstrated what Romulus described as “the ability to change a person’s emotional state” ^[21] .

Akihiro used this ability to bring Burr into a good frame of mind, entangling him and putting his blood with his claws. He, however, quickly recovered, and defeated Daken. Burr sent a revolver to Akihiro and was ready to kill his pupil, but he himself shot Burr several times and wanted to strike the final blow, but Romulus appeared, who said that he had other plans for Burr. He then asked Daken if he heard anything about adamantium ^[22] .

Many years later, Romulus told Daken that his father was still alive, but he lied, saying that Wolverine was guilty of the death of Itsu. Also, the villain told Daken that Wolverine was afraid of what his son would turn into. This lie has sown the seeds of revenge in Akihiro's soul. And this revenge Romulus has been fueling for decades ^[21] .

Meeting with Wolverine

When Wolverine was captured by Shch.I.Ta agents, Daken put on the form of one of them and made his way into the building where his father was kept. There he brutally stabbed Dum-Dum Dugan , before he reached Logan. Daken put a wound in his stomach and left him to bleed like he had once done to his mother. Seeing a tear on his father’s face, Daken blamed him for weakness and left prison. ^[23]

Then Daken went to Berlin, to the house of a woman with whom he ruthlessly “played”. He inspired her to meet with one man, who in fact needed him to get a passport. Out of grief, the woman began to drink a bottle of Burgundy wine, into which Daken poured a large dose of sleeping pills. Thus, Daken made a conscious choice in favor of the unusually perverse murder of this woman so that no one could come out to him ^[9] .

Walking through the streets of Potsdam , Daken met with an anonymous messenger, who reminded him of his true purpose, and also conveyed that his master was dissatisfied with them. Daken killed the envoy to cover his tracks. Then he went by train to Brussels , seeing his father go there in a stolen car. Soon a stranger called him (who turned out to be Silas Burr) and confirmed that Wolverine was heading for Brussels. Daken followed his father to the bank vault, in which there was a carbonadium synthesizer, after which a bloody fight ensued between them. There, Daken demonstrated incredible speed, agility and strength. However, the fight was interrupted by Kiber, who entered the battle with Akihiro, trying to find out from the whereabouts of his "master" ^[24] .

After losing the fight due to the incredible endurance of the former teacher, Daken fled, leaving them with Wolverine to deal with each other. He later returned to his master, where he was severely beaten and tortured. He was told to refrain from pursuing Wolverine ^[25] .

Some time later, Daken returned, interrupting the fight between Wolverine and Deadpool , in which Logan was suspended above a pool of water ^[26] . Daken cut off Deadpool's left hand and pulled the lever, throwing Wolverine into the water. After a short duel with Deadpool, Daken threw two grenades into the pool, which allowed Wolverine to jump out of the water ^[27] . On the way to Wolverine, he received a bullet from the Winter Soldier, which turned out to be made of carbonadium. Wolverine explained that he hired Deadpool to attract Daken’s attention, and then went with him to safety.

Daken came to his senses, being in an unknown cave somewhere in Japan. In this cave there were mutilated people, on whom experiments were conducted under the auspices of the Weapon X program. It turns out that Wolverine protected this object a decade ago, and then destroyed it with the help of explosives. Everyone in Weapon X believed that the test subjects were dead, but they somehow survived. They found Daken, who was frightened and panicked. Guided by instinct only, he killed most of these people before Wolverine found him. Because of the bullet fired by the Winter Soldier, Daken lost most of his memories, like his father ^[21] .

X-Men: Original Sin

While Wolverine went looking for Charles Xavier to help restore Daken’s memory, ^[28] Akihiro was abducted by Miss Sinister and her partner Sebastian Shaw , who offered to help him bring back the memories ^[29] . Miss Sinister tried to manipulate Daken, bringing false memories into him, but he saw her lies and pierced with his claws ^[30] . Xavier then revealed to Daken his true memories, after which he learned that Romulus was responsible for the death of his mother. Daken joined his father in search of retaliation ^[31] .

Soon they were found by Cyber, who offered to unite. Having received a refusal, he tried to eliminate them, but he himself fell into a trap. Daken, it would seem, then betrayed Wolverine, choosing the side of Kibera ^[32] . Despite this, he subsequently killed Kibera, leaving his body to Wolverine ^[22] .

Dark Avengers

When Norman Osborne came to power after the end of the Secret invasion of the Squill , he formed a team of his Avengers , where he also recruited Daken, who took the name of Wolverine ^[33] . Daken agreed to join the team in order to provoke Cyclops into action, since it was he who had the blade of Muramasa, the only weapon capable of blocking Daken’s healing factor and killing him. Taking the name of his father, Daken began to wear his old tan suit. Cyclops, having learned of Daken's membership in Osbourne's Avengers, took the blade of Murasama and decided to kill him ^[34] .

After a short bout, Daken took a piece of Murasama Blade and came with him to Tinkerer, who then melted the blade, connecting it with the third pair of Dark Wolverine's claws located on the lower side of the forearm ^[35] .

The first mission of the Dark Avengers was to assist Doctor Duma , who was attacked by Morgana Le Fay ^[36] . The team went to Latvia, where he joined the battle against countless mystical creatures. Only after Osborn and Duma managed to stop the sorceress, the Dark Avengers returned to headquarters, where they faced the resurrected Sentinel ^[37] .

When Spider-Man entered the Avengers tower under the guise of Mac Gargan , Daken set an ambush for him, calculating him by smell, and attacked ^[38] . However, the agile hero managed to evade Daken’s rage and disable him with an electric generator ^[39] .

Daken also became a member of the Dark X-Men of Norman Osbourne. He was also in the Dark Avengers, however, during their quarrel with the Dark X-Men, he sided with the latter. On the question of Marked which side he eventually chose, Daken answered that he always played for both teams ^[11] .

After repeated unsuccessful attempts to track down and kill the Punisher , Osborne sent Daken and a detachment of soldiers M. O.L. OT to do this work. After a bloody battle, Daken decapitated Castle before throwing his remains off the roof. Parts of the Punisher's body were collected by young people, seemingly under the guise of Leshego. The Punisher was later resurrected by the name of FrankenKasl ^[40] .

Subsequently, Dr. Bruce Benner dragged his son Skaar into the battle with Daken. He used his pheromones to calm Skaar and bring him back to his human form. Skaar asked Daken to kill him, as he was the cause of the death of a large number of people, but the Hulk and Wolverine intervened. There was a battle between parents and children, which was stopped when Benner declared that Skaar had learned a lesson while Daken disappeared ^[41] .

Daken’s loyalty to Osbourne, as well as his ulterior motives, remained in question ^[42] . This led to a standoff with Marked and Ares . He secretly helped the Fantastic Four ^[43] . He tried to steal evidence against Norman Osbourne to clear his name, but was stopped by Marked ^[44] . Some time later, a record leaked into the network, where Daken brutally kills his enemies in front of an elderly woman and her grandson ^[45] . Osbourne’s attempts to improve Daken’s reputation led to a confrontation with Amy Doolin and her people ^[46] . As a result, Osbourne still managed to make Daken a hero in the eyes of the public, but this led to the death of many innocent people ^[47] . The Moonstone attempted to bring him out to clear water, but Daken told her that she and Osbourne were disgusting to him ^[47] .

During the Siege of Asgard, Akihiro stabbed Osbourne in the back with one of his Muramas blades, easily piercing the Iron Patriot's armor and finishing it with a blow to the head. It later turned out that the assassination of Osborne was just an illusion that Fates showed Akihiro ^[13] . While the other Dark Avengers were arrested, Daken was the only one who managed to escape when he took on the guise of one of their guards ^[48] .

Daken then contacted his father for help in defeating Romulus ^[49] . Then Daken betrayed Wolverine and helped Romulus ^[50] . Then, having learned that Romulus was going to hand over his empire to Wolverine, Daken slaughtered him before Wolverine arrived with the Cloak to move Romulus into the Dark Dimension. Between Wolverine and Daken there was a battle that the latter lost. When Akihiro awoke, he saw that his third pair of claws, made from Muramasa's blade, had been removed from his hands.

Loner again

For some time Daken stayed in Rome . In the end, he went to Tokyo in search of Muramas. There he encountered the resurrected Frank Castle ^{[51] [52] [53]} . Daken barely survived the clash with Frank Castle, whose new form made him stronger and more dangerous ^[54] . Wolverine intervened in the battle, but Daken almost killed both ^[55] . Then Daken went to Milan , where he used the designer to create a new suit for himself. When he finished work, Daken killed him and moved to San Francisco . He began to watch the two opposing group. One defended the rights of mutants, the other was categorically against them. Akihiro thought that it was all just a waste of time and it would be better if all these people took their posters and beat each other to death. Daken decided to stick to his own position ^[56] .
