The unknown artist got his name from his most famous work - "Portrait of Anna Russell, Countess Warwick ", which is currently in the collection of Woburn-Abby . Ann (Anna) Russell - English aristocrat, maid of honor and close friend of Queen Elizabeth I ; the third and last wife of Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick . Art historians suggest that the Master Countess Warwick created, along with the portrait of Countess Warwick in 1567-1569, several other exquisite female portraits. He also captured group portraits of aristocratic families, such as “ William Brooke, tenth Lord Cobham with family ” [2] . Portraits give an idea of the clothes and everyday life of the nobility in the Tudor era [1] .
In addition to works stored in museums such as Woburn-Abby or the British Tate Gallery , recently, several portraits from private collections at large auctions have been attributed to Master Countess Warwick [3] . He was credited with "Portrait of Maria Potter, the wife of Thomas Potter, aged 23" [4] , which was sold by Sotheby's English auction house in April 2012 for a total of 107,500 pounds . The portrait came from a private collection from Devon and was initially valued at only 500 pounds in the antique market, but its price rose sharply after attribution to Countess Warwick's Master [5] .
The artist is also attributed to portraits of people who occupied a prominent position in European politics, or included in their environment: “Portrait of Humphrey Lloyd (1527-1568) ”( National Library of Wales ),“ Portrait of Margaret of Austria , Duchess of Parma (1522-1586) ”( Touchstones Rochdale ),“ Portrait of Anna Page, Lady Sharington (d. 1608) ”( Lacock Abbey , Fox Talbot Museum and Village) [6] , “Portrait of Thomas Nayvet, 1st Baron Nayvet (1539-1617) ” [7] .
Attempts were made to identify the Master Countess Warwick with artists known from the Tudor era. In particular, he was identified with the artist Nicholas Lezard (various versions of his name: English Nikolas Lezard , English Nikolas Lizard , English Nikolas Lisory ), a Frenchman by birth, but who worked at the English court, wore the high rank of Serjeant Painter , documentary evidence of which is available from 1554 to 1571, when, he probably died [1] . There is a similarity between the paintings of Countess Warwick and the work of the South Dutch ( Flemish ) painter who moved to England, Hans Eworth ( English Hans Eworth , 1515-1574) [4] .
Style Features
The portraits of Master Countess Warwick are painted in oil on a wooden panel and are usually dated. The second inscription often indicates the age of the depicted model. The artist usually uses symbols that are understandable to contemporaries, for example: a carnation behind the girl’s left ear (often used as a symbol of betrothal) in combination with branches of oak leaves (symbolizing constancy). Based on the small details captured in the portraits, successful attempts are made to identify the characters depicted on them. Features of the artist’s manner include: soft hair treatment, finely drawn lips, which are usually depicted by a straight horizontal line, emphasized attention to details of the costume and jewelry [8] .
Of particular interest are the group portraits of the Master Countess Warwick, who captured the provincial English aristocracy in the family circle [9] .
