John Grierson ( born John Grierson ; April 26, 1898 , Dinston, Sterling , Scotland , UK - February 19, 1972 , Bath , Somerset , England , UK ) is a British and Canadian film editor, cameraman, screenwriter, film producer and documentary filmmaker of Scottish descent. One of the main founders and leaders of the "School of English Documentary Films", which is even called the "Grirson School" [1] .

Biography
Born in the family of a school teacher. During World War I, he served on minesweepers in the Royal Navy . In 1924 he graduated from the University of Glasgow , continuing his studies at the University of Chicago . Published in as a film critic. In 1927 he returned to the UK. In 1928, he headed the cinema department at the Imperial Trade Council, which has been financing the production of non-player tapes for several years. In 1929 he made his film debut. In 1930-1933 he was the director of the cinema association for the purchase and sale of films ( Empire Marketing Board ) [2] . He was the initiator of the invitation of Robert Flaherty to England, whose first work experience in a new place was the picture “Industrial Britain” (1931-1932), shot with the active participation of Grierson [1] . In 1933 he headed the cinema department at the Main Post Office. In 1936 he founded the company "Film Saint", which takes on the functions of coordinating the relations of filmmakers and financiers, ready to invest in the creation of non-fiction films [1] . In 1938-1945 he worked in Canada.
In 1946-1950 he worked at UNESCO [2] , took part in the first General Conference of UNESCO in Paris at the end of 1946. In 1957-1967 he worked on Scottish television. Siegfried Krakauer described him as follows - “the founder and leader of the documentary direction of British cinema” [3] .
He was the chairman of the jury of the 17th Venice Film Festival .
Memory
- In 1972, the annual John Grierson Award was established, which is awarded to documentaries in nine categories.
- In 1973, Canadian documentary filmmakers made a film about their colleague.
