Frey is a screenwriter for the films " Kissing For Fun " and Sugar: The Fall of the West [6] . In 2003, he published the novel Million Little Pieces, which Amazon.com chose as the best book of the year. [7]

In 2004, J. Frey wrote “To My Friend Leonard,” which became a continuation of “A Million Little Pieces,” the plot of which focused on the relationship between father and son. My Friend Leonard was published in June 2005 and has become a bestseller. His most recent novel, Bright Sunny Morning, has been released at HarperCollins. Frey's books have been translated into thirty-one languages. [8] [9]

"Bright Shiny Morning" (Bright Shiny Morning, 2008) entered the list of best sellers according to The New York Times , but received mixed reviews. The New York Times gave the book an enthusiastic review. [10] The New Yorker described the novel as “banal.” [11]

At the end of 2018, James Frey became the winner of the Bad Sex in Fiction Award, established by The Literary Review magazine, receiving an award for the worst erotic scene. Thus, the jury noted his novel "Katerina", coming to the conclusion that there are too many long dubious erotic passages in the description of the heroes sex scene [12] .

Full Fathom Five

In 2009, Frey founded Full Fathom Five , a new book publisher focused on teenagers, whose goal was to create commercial Twilight- type book novels. In November 2010, a scandal broke out revealing the details of the removal of co-author Frey Joby Hughes from the creation of the Lorien Saga. A New York Magazine article , James Frey's Fiction Factory, revealed some details about Frey's company. In the article, Frey is accused of abusing and using cheap labor to mass-produce books for teenagers [13] [14] .
