Born in Kiev, in the family of a descendant of an old Swedish family, the division commander N. I. Sutgof . As a child, according to the then custom, he was enlisted in the military service - at the age of 7 he was considered a conscript of the Don Cossack army. He was brought up first in the Moscow University guesthouse , and after the events of 1812 - in one of the best educational institutions in Kiev, at the end of the course in which, on March 29, 1817, he joined the cadet in the 7th Jäger Regiment ; harness-junker - from 7.9.1817, ensign - from 22.3.1819. He was transferred to the 25th Jaeger Regiment - 10/28/1819; lieutenant - from 29.4.1820, lieutenant - from 2.6.1822.

He was transferred to the Life Guards Grenadier Regiment on December 10, 1823. In the first half of 1825 he met some prominent representatives of the Decembrist movement: Kakhovsky , Ryleyev , Bestuzhev-Marlinsky and, under their influence, entered the Northern Secret Society in September. Part of the 2nd battalion of the Life Guards of the Grenadier Regiment, led by Sutgof and Panov , December 14, 1825 joined the rebels in Senate Square .

According to the Supreme Criminal Court , after a six-month pre-trial detention in cell No. 10 of the Alekseyevsky ravelin of the Peter and Paul Fortress , he was assigned to the first category of criminals, demoted and sentenced to death by cutting off his head [1] , but this punishment by the Highest Confirmation was replaced by unlimited hard labor, and on August 8, 1826 he was sent to Swartholm, and on June 21, 1827 sent to Siberia (by this time a twenty-year sentence was set).

Delivered to the Chita prison - August 25, 1827; Arrived at the Petrovsky Plant in September 1830; On 8.11.1832 the sentence was reduced to 15 years, and on 14.12.1835 to 13 years. By decree of July 10, 1839, after serving his sentence, he was sent to a settlement in the Vvedenskina settlement of the Zhilkinsky volost of the Irkutsk province (20 versts from Irkutsk) and married the daughter of the mountain headquarters doctor, Anna Fedoseyevna Yanchukova; their marriage was childless. After the house he bought there burned down, in 1841 he was transferred to the village of Kudu , and in July 1842 he was transferred to the village of Malaya Razvodnaya .

In 1848, at the request of his mother, he was identified as a private in the Kuban Jaeger Regiment of the Caucasian Separate Corps, where he rose to the rank of ensign by the end of 1854. According to the manifesto on amnesty, on August 26, 1856, it was restored to its former rights; December 30, 1857 he was transferred to the 6th reserve battalion of the Kuban Infantry Regiment, located in the Yekaterinoslav province . Already on January 13, 1858 he was appointed head of the Moscow fencing school; second lieutenant - since February 9, 1859.

In 1859, Prince Baryatinsky was invited to manage mineral waters, first Kislovodsk and then Borjomi, where he also corrected the positions of military commander, manager of the state-owned Borjomi estate, forester and ranger of the Borjomi palace. Lieutenant - from 13.1.1864, staff captain - from 3.1.1867, captain - from 5.12.1870.

He died in Borjomi and was buried in the fence of a local church.

Contemporaries testified to his outstanding education, extreme well-read and "great economic experience."
