Islam is the official religion in Brunei , 67% of the population are Muslims, mainly Sunnis of Malay descent, who follow the Shafi school of Islamic law. Most of the other residents follow the Muslim Kebayns group (the population is dominated by indigenous tribal groups and the Chinese population). [one]
History
Islam was adopted in the 15th century, when the Malay Muslim was adopted as the Sultan. The Sultan is traditionally responsible for the observance of Islamic traditions, although usually the responsibility was assigned to the appointed officials.
Since the Sultans in the 1930s took advantage of rising oil revenues to provide an extensive system of social security and the promotion of Islam, including subsidizing the Haji, building mosques, and expanding the religious affairs department.
Under the 1959 constitution, Islam became the official religion of the country.
On April 30, 2014, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah announced the implementation and execution of the first stage of Sharia in Brunei from May 1, 2014.
