Biography

Born on September 14, 1912 in Simbirsk .

In 1935 he graduated from the Faculty of Physics of Moscow State University , the head of the thesis - one of the first students of L. I. Mandelstam , academician M. A. Leontovich .

In the years 1935-1937 - work at the University of Gorky .

In 1937 he began work at the established Institute of Theoretical Geophysics of the USSR Academy of Sciences .

During the war years he worked in the field of radar and artillery equipment, it is necessary to create equipment for the acoustic location of aircraft.

In 1942 he defended his thesis, the theme: "The propagation of sound waves in a turbulent atmosphere."

From 1944 he worked at Moscow State University.

In 1952 he defended his doctoral thesis, the theme: "On the effect of pulsations of the refractive index on the propagation of sound and electromagnetic waves" and received the title of associate professor.

In 1955 he was awarded the title of professor.

From 1969 to 1980 he combines work at Moscow State University and work as head of the ultrasound department at the Acoustic Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

From 1975 to 1987 he headed the Department of Acoustics, Faculty of Physics, MSU.

He died on March 17, 2000 , becoming a victim of a car accident.

Scientific and social activities

At Moscow State University, he taught the courses “Introduction to Acoustics”, “Physical Acoustics”.

From 1962 to 1999 - member of the editorial board of the Bulletin of Moscow University . A series of Physics, Astronomy, and in the period 1975-1980 - the chief editor of this journal.

Member of the editorial board of the Acoustical Journal .

Author of more than 200 articles, including articles in such journals as Reports of the USSR Academy of Sciences , Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics , Achievements in Physical Sciences , Solid State Physics, Acoustic Journal, Moscow University Bulletin, Nature , Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, etc.

His students defended 30 PhD theses, and 8 of them later became doctors of science and professors.
