Porovsky, Sylvester

He graduated from the Faculty of Physics of the University of Warsaw in 1960, in 1965 received the title of Doctor of Physics at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, in 1972 he became an honorary doctor. In 1978 he received the title of professor of physical sciences. He completed an internship at Harvard University with professor of high-pressure physics V. Paul ^[1] . Since 1964, he worked at the Laboratory of Pressure and Research of Semiconductors at the Institute of Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, from 1972 to 2010 he headed the Unipress Laboratory of Physics and Technology of High Pressure at the Polish Academy of Sciences (since 2004 - the Institute of High Pressure Physics, whose vice-chairman Porovsky was elected). He also worked at the University of Warsaw, published more than 400 scientific articles, was a member of the Polish Physical Society.

December 12, 2001 the team of Sylvester Porovsky tested a blue semiconductor laser, which was a breakthrough not only in Polish science, but also in the field of optoelectronics. The basis for creating the light source was blue gallium nitride crystals ^[2] . Following this success of Porovsky, Poland began to conduct a series of experiments on growing gallium nitride crystals for the further production of blue lasers and other electronics: in 2010, the Polish company Ammono managed to grow absolutely pure crystals up to 51 mm in size at high pressure, when the substance becomes a supercritical fluid (in in previous cases, physicists could not grow crystals larger than 20 mm) ^[3] .

Porovskiy starred in the 1989 documentary film "The Structure of Man" - a biography of Krzysztof Zanussi ^[4] . Porovsky is well acquainted with Zanussi and is a friend of his family ^[5] . Porovsky is also one of the founders of the Association for the Promotion of Civic Thinking ^[6] .

• In 2013, Sylvester Porowski was awarded the for an innovative method of growing crystals.
• In 2013, for organizing scientific Polish-Ukrainian actions, Sylvester Porovsky received the award of the Capitals of the Polish-Ukrainian Association from the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church ^[8] .
