Buterin, Vitalik

Vitalik (Vitaliy Dmitrievich) Buterin (born January 31, 1994 , Kolomna , Russia ) is a Canadian-Russian programmer, co-founder and former editor of the Bitcoin Magazine print magazine, co-founder of the Ethereum project, for which he won in 2014 World Technology Award [2] bypassing Mark Zuckerberg and other applicants. He also won a $ 100,000 grant from Thiel Fellowship for the development of the project [2] .

Biography

Born in Russia, raised in Canada , where he moved with his parents at the age of six, speaks Russian, English and Chinese [3] . He lived for three years in Zug , Switzerland, and in 2017 he moved to Singapore [4] . He quit his studies at the University of Waterloo to work on blockchain projects.

Vitalik’s father, Dmitry, an IT specialist, encouraged him to write video games from the age of ten. He introduced his son to the ideas of blockchain and cryptocurrencies [5] . Vitalik Buterin became interested in bitcoin in 2011, and in the same year became a co-founder of the Bitcoin Magazine [6] [7] [8] . In 2012, Bitcoin Magazine began to be released as a print publication and became the first major print publication on this subject. He is also on the editorial board of the first peer-reviewed scientific journal Ledger [9] , devoted to cryptocurrencies and related topics.

Prior to working on Ethereum, he also worked on various open source projects related to Bitcoin [10] .

In May 2016, he came to Russia - for the first time since his move with his parents to Canada in 2001. During the visit, he met with Russian ministers and representatives of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation [11] .

In 2017, Vitalik Buterin entered the top 10 of the rating “40 most influential young people under 40” according to Fortune magazine [12] [13] , was included in the ranking of 600 brightest people under 30 years of Forbes magazine [14] , the newspaper “ Vedomosti ”recognized him as a professional of the year [15] .

On November 30, 2018, Vitalik Buterin received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel [16] [17] . Vitalik received recognition from the Faculty of Business and Economics for his work on developing the blockchain at Dies Academicus - the annual celebration of the founding of the university.

Charity

On February 10, 2018, Buterin donated 100 ETH to the non-profit organization Internet Archive. At the time of completion of the transaction, the donation was about $ 85,000 . This amount will double since the Pineapple Fund recently announced that it will double all donations for the Internet Archive to $ 1 million [18] .

Research

Human life extension

Buterin donated $ 2.4 million to the SENS Research Foundation in 2018 for research in the field of biotechnology rejuvenation and prolongation of human life [19] .
