Reviews
Positive
In 2004, in an interview with the Internet- portal Portal-Credo.Ru, the religious scholar S.I. Ivanenko , answering a question about impressions from the reports of members of the Center for Krishna Consciousness Societies in Russia submitted to the section "Religious Studies" of the XXXVII World Congress of Orientalists, held in Moscow on 16- August 21, noted that he “ also liked the performance of the representative of St. Petersburg Cand. Philos. Semen Viktorovich Whatman’s sciences on the history of Bengali Vaishnavism (the current in Hinduism, to which the USC belongs) , which, in his opinion, “ showed both a deep knowledge of the sources, and an understanding of the trends that exist in modern oriental studies, and the ability to comprehend them in line with scientific paradigm . " [9] In 2006, in an article published in the Hare Krishna journal Vaishnavism: an open forum, Ivanenko expressed the opinion that “ with rare scientific thoroughness and conscientiousness, links to sources and detailed reasoning ” in the book “Bengali Vaishnavism”, Whatman put forward the idea that that "there are serious arguments in favor of the fact that, following the monotheistic tradition within sampradaya Gaudiya Vaishnava , ISKCON expresses one of the main trends in orthodox Hinduism , which is in harmony with the spiritual and moral insights of biblical etc. Rokoff . " [ten]
Critical
In 2009, the religious scholar E. E. Deryagina [ref. 1] noted that " representatives of Western and Russian Vaishnavism in independent, including scientific, studies substantiate the traditional character of communities existing outside India " and indicate that " in modern Russian science, studies of apologists of Vaishnavism : candidates of philosophical sciences of S.V. Whatman (Sutapa Das) and A.S. Timoshchuk (Abkhinanda prabhu) . ” [one]
