Biography
Dewey was born April 7, 1858 in Burlington, Vermont in the family of Archibald's tobacco manufacturer Sprague Dewey (1811-1891) and Lucin's mother, Artemisia Rich Dewey (1830-1899). The elder brother John died tragically on January 17, 1859, and the younger brother John Dewey (1859-1952) becomes a famous philosopher and teacher [3] [4] .
In 1879, he received a Bachelor of Arts (AB) from the University of Vermont with honors from the . In 1879-1880, he taught at the North District School , in 1880-1881 the head teacher of the Underhill State Academy, in 1881-1882, the head teacher and teacher of Latin and Greek near Chicago [ 5] .
In 1883, Dewey entered graduate school at Johns Hopkins University , and in 1886 received a doctorate in economics (Ph.D.). The topic of the dissertation was “The History of American Economic Literature from the Past to the Time of Henry Carey ”. In the summer of 1885, she worked as a correspondent for Bradstreet's Financial Review. After graduating from graduate school in 1886, he accepted the appointment to the post of teacher of history and political science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , in 1888-1889 he was an assistant professor of economics and statistics, in 1889-1892 an assistant professor, and in 1893-1933 a professor and head of the department. Dewey taught the course from 1913-1931, creating the Department of Engineering Administration. In 1911-1913 - Chairman of the MIT faculty [6] .
Since 1886 - a member, and in 1886-1906 - Secretary of the . In 1894, chairman of a special commission in Massachusetts to study unemployment, in 1896 a member of the council of the Research Charity and Reform Institute of Massachusetts, in 1902 - a special expert on salaries for the 12 census, in 1904 - member of the state commission on labor relations [4] [2] . During the First World War, he worked in Washington for the federal government [6] .
Dewey was the first editor of the journal of the American Statistical Association and in 1911-1940 - managing editor of . In 1908, Vice President, and in 1909, President of the American Economic Association [5] . Dewey wrote articles in the Palgrave Dictionary of Political Economy, the , the Encyclopedia of Britannic , the American Yearbook and the History of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts [6] .
In 1910, Dewey received an from the University of Vermont , and in 1909-1940 the trustee of the , and since 1933 emerit - professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology [7] .
In 1919, director of the economic section of information and education for the Department of Labor in Washington, member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , member of the International Statistical Institute , member of the emergency council for railroad disputes during the threat of strikes in 1928-1933, member of the third convocation of the Arbitration Commission in 1931-1933 [8] .
Dewey died December 13, 1942 in Cambridge [6] .
Family
Dewey married on June 29, 1886, Mary Cornelie Hopkins of Madison , Wisconsin (12/16/1860-1951). They left their son Bradley Dewey (08.23.1887-14.10.1974), who married in 1915 Margarita Mellen (Dewey) (01.10.1891-4.06.1974) and daughter Dorothy Comstock (Dewey) (01.25.1889-1963) . Grandchildren from Bradley: Bradley Jr., Davis Rich Dewey II (1917-1972), Margarita Carroll (1919-1998), Anna Kent (Dewey) [9] .

In honor of Dewey, the DEW library was named MIT [10] .
