History

The title of Baron Say and Seal was created in February 1447 for the English statesman and military man James Fiennes (c. 1395-1450), as a reward for his services during the Hundred Years War . He served as the guardian lord of the five ports (1447-1450) and the lord treasurer (1449-1450). His son William Fiennes, 2nd Baron (c. 1428-1471), died at the Battle of Barnet in 1471 . His son, Henry Fiennes, de jure 3rd Baron Say and Seal (c. 1460-1476), was known as Lord Say and Seal, but never called to parliament. His descendant, Richard Fine, de jure 7th Baron Say and Seal (c. 1557-1613), inherited the title in 1573 . For many years he remained not recognized as a baron, only on August 9, 1603 he received a patent from King James I Stuart confirming his right to the title.

William Fiennes, 8th Baron Say and Seal (1582–1662), on July 7, 1624 received the title of Viscount Say and Seal ( Peerst of England ). He was succeeded by his eldest son, James Fiennes, the 8th Viscount Say and Seal (c. 1602–1674). He served in the House of Commons of England from Banbury (1625), Oxfordshire (1626–1629, 1640–1648, 1660–1661), and also served as Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire (1668–1674). After the death of the latter, the titles of Viscount Say and Sil and Baron Say and Sil were divided. The barony was in a state of expectation, the daughters of the deceased, the venerable Elizabeth, the wife of John Twistleton, and the venerable Francis, the wife of Andrew Ellis, claimed it. The title of viscount, which could be inherited only through the male line, was given to his nephew, William Fiennes, 3rd Viscount Say and Seal (c. 1641–1698). He was the son of Nathaniel Fiennes, the second son of the first Viscount. When his son, Nathaniel Fiennes, 4th Viscount Say and Seal (1676-1710), passed away, this line of the family was interrupted. His cousin was his cousin, Lawrence Fiennes, 5th Viscount Say and Seal (c. 1690-1742). He was the son of Colonel John Fiennes, the third son of the first Viscount. He was succeeded by another cousin, Richard Fiennes, 6th Viscount Say and Seal (1716-1781). In 1781, after the death of the latter, who did not leave male descendants, the Viscount title was interrupted.

By 1715, of all the applicants for the baronial title, Cecil Twistleton, de jure, the 10th Baroness Say and Seal (d. 1723 ) survived. She was the daughter of the aforementioned Hon. Elizabeth, daughter of the second Viscount Say and Sil. In 1781, the baronial title was received by his great-grandson, Thomas Twistleton (1735-1788), who became the 13th baron of Say and Seal. He was a major general in the British Army. His son, Gregory William Twistleton, 14th Baron (1769–1844), adopted the additional surname “Airlie and Fiennes” in 1825 . His successor was his son, William Thomas Airdley-Twistleton-Fiennes, the 15th Baron Say and Seal (1798-1847), who, in turn, was succeeded by his cousin, Frederick Benjamin Airdley-Twistleton-Fiennes, the 16th Baron (1799-1887). In 1849, he adopted the double additional surname Wykham-Fiennes (the first Viscount Say and Seal was a descendant of the sister and heiress of William Wykham (1320/1324 - 1404). His grandson, Jeffrey Rupert Cecil Tuilston-Wyckham-Fiennes, 18th Baron Say and Seal (1858–1937), served as the court supervisor (1912–1915) in the liberal administration of Herbert Henry Asquith, and his grandson, Nathaniel Tomass Allen Fiennes, 21st Baron Say and Seal (born 1920) , was the holder of the title as of 2007 . In 1965, he abandoned the additional surnames "Tuistleton and Wykham."

Another notable member of the Fiennes family was the liberal politician, Sir Eustace Edward Fiennes (1864–1943), the second son of the 17th Baron, who represented Banbury in the House of Commons (1906–1910, 1910–1918), and also served as governor of the Seychelles (1918-1921) and the Leeward Islands (1921-1929). In 1916, he was created the title of a baronet from Banbury in the county of Oxfordshire. As of 2010, this title belongs to his grandson, Sir Ranulf Tuislton-Wykhem-Fiennes, 3rd Baronet from Banbury (born 1944 ). The English actors , brothers Rafe Fiennes (born 1962 ) and Joseph Fiennes (born 1970 ), come from the youngest branch of the family, being descendants of Frederick Fiennes, the 16th Baron Say and Seal (1799-1887).

Thanks to the marriage of James Fiennes, 2nd Viscount Say and Seal, with Francis Cecil (d. 1684 ), daughter of Edward Cecil, 1st Viscount Wimbledon , the Fiennes family descends from William Cecil, 1st Baron Burley (1520— 1598), as well as the English royal dynasty of Plantagenets.
