Biography

Sergey Kononchuk was born on May 29, 1912 in Kiev. His father, a native of Volyn, worked as a postman, his mother, a peasant from the Chernihiv region, was a housewife.

Sergei showed his artistic talent in early childhood, his formation as an artist began during his studies (1921-1928) at labor school No. 61 named after I. Franko. In 1928, Sergei graduated from the seven-year plan and entered the graphic department of the School of Art and Industry.

The beginning of Kononchuk’s creative activity can be considered 1927, when at the age of 15 he became a participant in the Kiev exhibition of unprofessional artists. In 1929, he took part in the second exhibition of unprofessional artists, held in Kiev, and subsequently in Kharkov. The works of Kononchuk presented there were positively evaluated by Literaturnaya Gazeta and Komsomolskaya Pravda .

At the international exhibition in Paris , 8 of his works were selected, the jury of this exhibition gave the artist a diploma. However, Kononchuk’s work was lost during his return to Kiev.

Kononchuk began to receive orders for the design of children's books in the publishing house "Culture" and took part in the design of the magazine "Semaphore". In 1931 he worked as an animator at the Kiev film factory “Ukrainfilm” (now the A. Dovzhenko film studio ), where, together with artists I. Klebanov and L. Kryukov, he participated in the creation of the animated films “ Knock Knock and His Buddy Zhuk ” and “Arrogant” chick". In 1937 Kononchuk lived in Samarkand , where he performed a series of drawings dedicated to this city. During 1940, he worked at a newsreel studio. Kononchuk was a versatile artist, but most of all his talent was manifested in drawings and book graphics. He completed illustrations for the tales "Gingerbread Man" and "War in the Garden" and other publications for children.

After the start of World War II, he went to the front. He died in 1941 in a prisoner of war camp [1] .
