Biography

In France, the most famous work by Delarue-Mardryus is the poem "L'odeur de mon pays était dans une pomme ..." (translated by V. Bryusov, "Sensing the aroma of my native country, with my teeth // I dug into an apple ..." [2] ) Her works are filled with a passion for travel and love for her native Normandy . For example, in the 1932 L'Ex-voto novel, she describes the life of Honfleur fishermen at the beginning of the 20th century.

From 1900 to 1915, she was married to a translator Joseph-Charol Mardrus , whose last name was added to her maiden name. However, she primarily had a homosexual orientation. Her connections with several women throughout her life are known, many works of Delarue-Mardrus are devoted to lesbian love.

In 1902-1903, the poetess created a series of poems about love for the American writer and mistress of the salon, Natalie Clifford Barney . They were published posthumously in 1957 under the title Nos secrètes amours [3] . Barney also became the prototype of the character of the 1930 novel L'Ange et les Pervers .

The protagonist of this novel is a hermaphrodite named Marion, who lives a double life, often visits literary salons in a women's dress, and then changes her skirt to trousers and participates in gay parties. Barney appears in the novel as Loretta Wells, the mistress of the salon, who for most of the plot tries to return the former lover. These events artistically describe the real attempts of Natalie Barney to restore relations with her ex-girlfriend Rene Vivien [4] .

In 1936, Delarue-Mardrews became the first prize winner Rene Vivien [5] [6] [7] .

One of the fans described Lucy Delarue-Mardrews as follows:

She's gorgeous. She sculpts, rides, loves a woman, then another one and another. She managed to free herself from her husband, and she never again got embroiled in a new marriage or subjugated another man.
