Taxonomy

For the first time, a new species was scientifically described in 2010 [2] . The holotype is a 51.4 cm long mature male, caught off the coast of South Africa at a depth of 308 m ( ). Paratype: a mature female 53.5 cm long, caught there [3] .

Range

These bentopelagic rays are endemic to the waters of South Africa . Found at a depth of 39 to 545 m, mainly between 200 and 500 m [1] .

Description

The wide and flat pectoral fins of these rays form a rhombus disk with a triangular snout and rounded edges. On the ventral side of the disc are 5 gill slits , nostrils and mouth. The tail is long and thin [4] . The distal ends of the anterior part of the blades of the ventral fins are in the form of a spade. In adults, parallel continuous rows of spines lie in the middle of the disk and tail. Between the dorsal fins there are 6 spines. The distance between the dorsal fins does not exceed the base length of the first dorsal fin. The ventral surface of the pterygopodia is naked. The color of the upper surface of the disc is light brown without markings [2] . The maximum recorded length is 59.4 cm [1] .

Biology

These stingrays lay eggs enclosed in a hard horn capsule with protrusions in the corners. The length of the capsule, excluding protrusions, does not exceed 5 cm. The surface is covered with grooves. The rear protrusions are 45% longer than the front. Embryos feed exclusively on yolk [1] .

Human Interaction

These ramps are not the target fishing target. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has not yet evaluated the conservation status of the species.
