Arthur Twining Hadley ( born Arthur Twining Hadley ; April 23, 1856 , New Haven , Connecticut , USA - March 6, 1930 , Kobe , Japan ) - American economist , 13th president of Yale University in 1899-1921, fifth president of the American Economic associations in 1898-1899.

Biography

Arthur was born April 23, 1856 in New Haven, Connecticut in the family of father of Yale University professor of philology and mother Anne Loring Twining. Arthur’s maternal uncle was the scientist and inventor (1801–1884), and theologian uncle (1826–1864) [3] . Between 1868 and 1872, Arthur attended in New Haven [4] . He studied in 1872-1876, and graduated from Yale College in 1876, was a member of the oldest brotherhood of and the oldest secret society Skull and Bones , receiving prizes in English, classical literature and astronomy. In 1876-1877, Arthur studied history and political science at Yale University, in 1878-1879 he continued his studies in history and political science with Adolf Wagner at Berlin University [3] .

In 1879-1883 he began teaching at Yale University as a tutor in Greek, Latin and German, in 1883-1886 he was a professor of political science at the department of W. Samner , in 1886-1891 a professor of political science, in 1891-1899 the first Professor of Political Economy, in 1892-1895 the first dean , and 1899-1821 the 13th President of Yale University - the first lay person who does not have the holy dignity, occupying this position [3] .

From 1886 to 1887, he lectured at Harvard University on railroad administration issues. In 1902, he lectured at on the history of academic freedom [4] .

After resigning from the post of president of Yale University, he was elected director of the railway company [5] .

Family

June 30, 1891 Arthur married the daughter of the future Governor of Connecticut, , Helen Harrison Morris, they had two sons Morris and Hamilton and daughter Laura. During a trip around the world with his wife, they visited Europe , India and China , and near Japan Hadley fell ill with pneumonia and died on a ship on March 6, 1930. The body was first delivered to the port of Kobe , Japan , and then to New Haven, where it was buried at [4] .

Major Contribution to Science

As an economist, he first became widely known for his work, Rail Transport, Its History and Laws, published in 1885. The work became the standard in which Hadley examined rail transportation and rail tariffs [3] .

In 1915, Hadley advocated property qualifications for young politicians. In 1915, he approved military schools, and advocated military training for a degree [4] .
