Geographical location and transportation

The union is located in southern West Virginia at the intersection of US 219 and State 3 roads [2] . According to the US Census Bureau, the city ​​has a total area of ​​1.17 km².

History

The modern territory of the city was inhabited in 1774 by James Alexander. Monroe County was formed in 1799, and Alexander offered his possessions to build the district court building and the future city. The Union was founded in 1800, then the construction of the district court building was completed and the post office was opened. The city was a meeting place for soldiers during the Indian wars, so it was called Union . The city was incorporated in 1868. Near the city there is a monument to the Confederate soldiers of Monroe County [3] [2] .

Population

According to the 2010 census, the population of the Union was 565 people (of which 48.1% were men and 51.9% were women), there were 264 households and 156 families. Racial composition : white - 94.9%, Native Americans - 0.2% and representatives of two or more races - 1.6% [4] .

Of 264 households, 38.1% were married couples (11.4% with children under 18 years of age), women lived without husbands in 16.3% of households, men lived without wives in 4.5% of households, 40, 9% did not have a family. On average, 2.14 people were households, and the average family size was 2.77 people.

The population of the city by age range was as follows: 21.8% - residents under 18 years of age, 3.2% - between 18 and 21 years old, 50.6% - from 21 to 65 years old and 24.4% - aged 65 years and older. The average age of the population is 44.3 years. For every 100 females there are 92.8 males, while for 100 adult females there are already 84.9 males of comparable age [4] .

In 2014, out of 481 able-bodied residents over 16 years old, 209 people worked. At the same time, men had a median income of $ 31,875 per year, compared to $ 37,500 of the average annual income for women. In 2014, the median income for a family was estimated at $ 45,455, for a household - at $ 33,068. The per capita income is $ 16,594. 16.7% of the total number of families and 28.7% of the total population were below the poverty line at the time of the census [4] .

According to the Köppen climate classification, the climate of the Union refers to the marine climate of the west coast (Cfb). The average temperature in the year is 11 ° C, the warmest month is July (average temperature 21.7 ° C), the coldest - January (average temperature 0.2 ° C). Rehobos Church
