History
Ohrid Airport was opened in 1952 during the existence of the Slovak Republic of Macedonia as part of Socialist Yugoslavia . It was then located between the villages of Gorentsi and Orovnik. Initially, there was one 900-meter runway. The first international flight was completed on July 5, 1953 . In 2004, the last reconstruction of the airport was completed when a new lighting system was installed.
In 2008, the Government of the Republic of Macedonia signed a contract with the Turkish airline Tepe Akfen Ventures for 20 years to service the airports of Ohrid and Skopje, as well as further modernization. In the future, it is planned to build a new terminal at Ohrid Airport and improve VIP sections, as well as under this program it is planned to expand Skopje Airport and build a third airport in the town of Stip . The cost of the entire project is 200 million euros [1]
Features
The airport can accept both small planes and liners of sizes above average. The site is designed for a maximum of 9 aircraft, the terminal can receive up to 400 thousand passengers annually. At the airport there is an information department, a restaurant, a duty-free shop and a VIP leisure club.

Incidents
- On November 20, 1993, near the Ohrid airport , a Yak-42 plane crashed [4] , making a flight from Geneva to Skopje . Due to bad weather conditions, the plane was forced to land in Ohrid [5] , but crashed into Mount Troyani. The reason was a crew error who misunderstood the dispatcher’s instructions. Killed 124 people, including 8 crew members [6] . One of the passengers survived at the time of the accident, but died 11 days later in the hospital without regaining consciousness [7] .
