History

Oliver St. John, 1st Baron St. John of Bletso , 1578

Oliver St. John, 1st Baron St. John of Bletso, was a descendant of Sir John St. John (died c. 1482 ), the eldest son of Sir John Oliver St. John of Bletso (died 1437 ), husband Margaret Boshan of Bletso ( d. 1482 ), daughter of John Boshan, de jure of the 3rd Baron Boshan of Bletso (d. 1412), and the granddaughter of Roger de Boshan (died 1380 ), who was called to parliament as Baron Boshan of Bletso (1363-1379 / 1380). Oliver St. John's successor was his son, John St. John, 2nd Baron St. John of Bletso (d. 1596). He was one of the judges who participated in the trial against Mary Stuart . He represented Bedfordshire in the House of Commons (1559-1567) and served as Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire (1588-1596). He died without leaving his sons, so he was succeeded by his younger brother, Oliver St. John, 3rd Baron (c. 1540-1618), a member of the House of Commons from Bedfordshire in 1588-1596. And the title of Baron Boshan of Bletso began to claim Ann St. John, the daughter of the 2nd Baron and wife of William Howard, Lord Howard of Effingham , the eldest son and heir of Charles Howard, 1st Earl of Nottingham .

Oliver St. John, 1st Earl of Bolingbroke

The son of the 3rd Baron, Oliver St. John, the 4th Baron St. John of Bletso (c. 1580-1646), received the title of Earl of Bolingbroke on December 28, 1624 . He also served in the House of Commons from Bedfordshire (1597–1611) and served as Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire (1619–1627, 1629–1636) and Bedfordshire (1639–1646). His eldest son and heir, Oliver St. John (1603–1642), was called to parliament in 1641 as Baron St. John of Bletso. But he died before his father (he died at the Battle of Edgill in 1642). He sat in the House of Commons of England from Bedfordshire in 1624-1629. Oliver St. John was known as the 5th Baron St. John of Bletso. The 1st Earl of Bolingbroke was succeeded by his grandson, Oliver St. John, the 2nd Earl of Bolingbroke, the 6th Baron St. John of Bletso (d. 1688). He was the son of Paulet St. John, the youngest son of the 1st Earl of Bolingbroke. The 2nd Earl died childless, he was succeeded by his younger brother, Paulet St. John, the 3rd Earl Bolingbroke (1634-1711), who was a member of the House of Commons from Bedford in 1663-1685. They were not married, and after his death in 1711 the title of Earl of Bolingbroke was interrupted.

But the baronial title was inherited by his second cousin, Sir Paullet St. Andrew St. John, the 5th baronet (d. 1714 ), who became the 8th baron St. John of Bletso. He was a descendant of the venerable Sir Rowland St. John, the fourth son of the 3rd Baron St. John of Bletso. St. Andrew St. John, the 14th Baron St. John of Bletso (1759–1817), was a member of the House of Commons from Bedfordshire (1780–1784, 1785–1800, 1801–1805). His grandson, Boshan Mowbray St. John, the 17th Baron St. John of Bletso (1844-1912), served as Lord Lieutenant of Bedfordshire in 1905-1912.

As of 2010, the holder of the title was the great-grandson of the latter, Anthony Tudor St. John, 22nd Baron St. John of Bletso (born 1957), who became his father's successor in 1978 . He is one of the ninety elected hereditary peers who remained in the House of Lords after the 1999 House of Lords Act , where he occupies the benches of independent deputies.

The title of Baronet of St. John of Northwood in Northamptonshire (Baronet of England) was created on June 28, 1660 for Oliver St. John (1624-1662). He was the son of the Honorable Sir Rowland St. John, the fourth son of the 3rd Baron St. John of Bletso. His son, Sir St. Andrew St. John, 2nd Baronet (1658–1709), represented Northamptonshire in the House of Commons (1690–1695). The grandson of the latter, Sir Paulet St. Andrew St. John, 5th Baronet (d. 1714), in 1711 inherited the title of 8th Baron St. John of Bletso.

Oliver St. John (died c. 1497), the younger brother of the aforementioned Sir John St. John (died c. 1482 ), was the ancestor of the Viscounts Grandison and the Viscounts Bolingbroke and St. John .
