Baron Petre

Baron Petre of Rittl in Essex is an ancestral title in the England Peer system. It was created on July 21, 1603 for Sir John Petre (1549-1613). The Petre family came from Essex . He represented Essex in the House of Commons and served as Lord Lieutenant of Essex . Lord Peter was the son of Sir William Petra (1505–1572), Secretary of State under Kings Henry VIII, Mary I, Edward VI and Elizabeth I. Sir William acquired the Ingatestone Hall and the surrounding estate from King Henry VIII at full market value after it was transferred to the King of Barking Abbey after the dissolution of the Catholic monasteries in England.

The first baron was succeeded by his son, William Petre, 2nd baron Petre (1575-1637). He sat in the House of Commons from Essex in 1597 . His grandson, William Petre, 4th Baron Petre (1626–1684), was one of the accused of the conspiracy of Titus Oates and died at the Tower in 1684 . His younger brother, Thomas Petre, 6th Baron Petre (1633–1706), was Lord Lieutenant of Essex (1688). His great-grandson, Robert Edward Petre, 9th Baron Petre (1740–1801), who succeeded his father in his birth year, married Anne Howard (1742–1787), daughter of Philip Howard (1687–1749), Edward’s younger brother Howard, 9th Duke of Norfolk (1686-1777). After her uncle died in 1777, Anne became the heiress of the titles of Baron Howard , Furnival , Strange from Blackmer , Talbot , Braoz from Gower , Dacre from Gillesland , Greystock , Ferrers from Wem, Giffard from Brimsfeld and Verdon.

Bernard Petre, 14th Baron Petre (1858–1908), married Etheldred, daughter of Scottish-Canadian theologian William Clark Robinson (1829–1908). In 1913, five years after the death of Lord Petra, the title of Baron Furnival, who had been inactive since 1908 , was transferred to his daughter, Mary Francis Katherine Petra (1900-1968), who became the 19th Burness Furnival. The 14th Baron Petre was succeeded by his younger brother, Philippe Petre, the 15th Baron Petre (1864-1908).

As of 2010, the holder of the baronial title was the great-grandson of the latter, John Petre, 18th Baron Petre (born 1942), who succeeded his father, Joseph William Lionell Petre, 17th Baron Petre, in 1989 . The current Lord Petre has served as Essex Lord Lieutenant since 2002 .

Another famous member of the Petre family was father Sir Edward Petre, 3rd Baronet (1631–1699), an unpopular chaplain and adviser to King James II Stuart. The king made him a wardrobe clerk and asked the pope to make him bishop and later cardinal, but he was denied both requests.

The Petra family is known for its commitment to Catholicism . Barons Petre publicly recognized their Catholic faith. At least 12 family members were Jesuits . The Petre family also released two bishops, Francis Petre (1692–1775), the Apostolic Vicar of the Northern District (1752–1775), and Benjamin Petre (1672–1758), the Apostolic Vicar of the London District (1734–1758).

Estates

The family residence of the barons of Petra was Ingatestone Hall in Ingeistone ( Essex ) and Rattle Park in Essex. They also owned Thorndon Hall in the vicinity of Brentwood , located in a vast deer park, formerly called the Thorndon Old Hall. Thorndon Hall is currently administered by the Essex County Council .
