Mengoli, Pietro

Pietro Mengoli ( Italian: Pietro Mengoli , 1626 - 1686) - Italian mathematician , Catholic priest (since 1660). He made a significant contribution to the development of analytical ideas, in particular, was close to a rigorous justification of the concepts of limit and area . Biography and scientific activities

Born in Bologna in the family of a wealthy citizen Simon Mengoli. In Bologna, the scientist spent most of his life. He graduated from the University of Bologna at Cavalieri . After the death of Cavalieri (1647) he was succeeded at the department of mathematics and remained there for 39 years, until the end of his life.

Mengoli first began to deeply and in a fairly general form explore infinite series (previously mathematicians considered mainly geometric progression ). He formulated theorems on the limit of the sum and the product of convergent series . He proved the divergence of the harmonic series . The first to investigate a series of inverse squares and an alternating harmonic series:
