History
From 1821 to 1903, Panama was part of Colombia or its predecessor states. In 1903, Panama separated from Colombia and became a sovereign state. In 1921, Colombia recognized Panama’s independence after the United States paid Colombia compensation in the amount of US $ 25 million for interfering in the Colombian-Panama conflict [2] [3] .
In 2014, about 500,000 Colombians lived in Panama; Panamanian banks are a popular place to store cash among Colombian citizens [4] .
