Story
The film begins with an introduction to the main characters - Taki Tatibana and Mitsuha Miyomizu; waking up, they feel a sense of losing something important to them. The film then begins the story of the life of Mitsuhi, a high school student living in the countryside of Hida province . She wakes up with a strange sensation, and at school her friends tell her that the day before she was behaving very strangely. However, Mitsuha can not remember anything. Upon returning home, being the Mikizu Miko Temple, she and her sister participate in the ritual of preparing kutikamisake ( Jap. 口 噛 み 酒 , an ancient sake type made by chewing on rice) . After the end of the ritual, Mitsuha breaks down and screams hate for his hometown and his life, hoping to be born, at least after being reborn, as a handsome guy living in Tokyo . The next morning, Mitsuha wakes up in the body of a high school student, Taki Tatibana, who lives in downtown Tokyo, not knowing how or why this happened.
Soon Taki and Mitsuha understand that they both move to each other's bodies during sleep, but the reason for this remains a mystery to them. After a while, they begin to consider life in a strange body to be fun and interesting, setting the rules of behavior and agreeing not to interfere in personal life, leaving notes and notes about the days spent in each other's bodies. But, despite the agreement, Mitsuha helps Taki get closer to his colleague Mika Okudera, and in the end, on his behalf arranges her a date. During a date, Miki notices that Taki’s character has changed a lot lately, and the reason for this is most likely the girl he truly loves. Seeing that the boy's heart does not belong to her, she returns home, leaving Taki alone with her thoughts. After thinking, Taki tries to contact Mitsuha on the phone, but it turns out that her numbers do not exist, and the shower resettlement for some reason stopped. After much deliberation, he realizes that Mitsuha has a special place in his life and decides to talk to her personally, going to her hometown.
Not knowing neither the name of the city, nor its exact location, he relies solely on his sketches, which he drew from the memories of the local landscapes, and tries to find a way there. In the company of his friends, Tsukasa Fuji and Miki Okudera, he travels to other parts of Japan, trying in vain to find this town. And once in a roadside restaurant in the city of Hida, the waitress recognizes the landscape in the picture. The owner of the restaurant, a native of that same town, takes them to a giant impact crater and says that three years ago a comet destroyed a city called Itomori on this very spot, killing one third of the population. Taki scans the list of names of people who died from the disaster, and finds the name of Mitsuhi and both her friends - Katsuhiko Tesigavary and Sayaki Natori.
No longer understanding what is reality and what is not, he is trying to find any information about the incident in an effort to understand what is happening. All Mitsuhi’s records in his phone disappeared in a mysterious way, and Taki’s last ghostly hope remains only an underground temple in the mountains from his memories to which grandmother Mitsuhi took her sisters to present kutikamisake to the gods. With the help of the owner of the restaurant, the guy manages to find a way there. Realizing that his time frame and Mitsuhi had previously been synchronized, he asks for help from the god of the temple named Musubi ( Jap. 結 び , literally "connect") and drinks sake made by Mitsuha, hoping to reconnect with her body before the impact of the comet fragment . Once again in the body of the girl, Taki tells friends about the disaster and enlists their help in an attempt to evacuate the city. He himself goes to the temple to find Mitsuha.
Her spirit awakens in Taki's body, and she heads to the top of the mountain, where Taki should also be in Mitsuha's body, but they can only feel each other. But only in that short moment when the sun sets and katavare docks ( Jap. 片 割 れ 時 , literally “twilight” [a] ) sets in, they return to their bodies and now, standing there, are able to see each other. Despite the joy of meeting, Taki warns Mitsuha about an imminent catastrophe and says she needs to convince her father to evacuate the population. They also decide to write their names on their hands, so as not to forget about each other and about their exchange of bodies. But before they can finish, their reunion breaks off, the sun sets completely, and they return each in its own time. Despite the fact that the characters are desperately trying to remember the names of each other, nothing comes of them.
After the fall of the comet, eight long years have passed. And although the city of Itomory was destroyed, most of its inhabitants managed to escape thanks to the “civil defense teachings” held in the town (according to the official version of the authorities). Then one day Mitsuha, now living in the vast Tokyo, meets somewhere on the stairs Taki, who continue to be tormented by obscure images of the past. However, the threads of fate and time continue to bind the boy and the girl tightly, and the heroes have enough of a single glance to remember everything.
