The surface of the lake is at an altitude of 946 meters. The lake has an almost perfect round shape, not counting the bay in the north. The lake is 620 meters long, 460 meters wide, and the maximum depth is about seven meters. It is replenished only with melt water and precipitation, but it is very clean. Around the lake rise the walls of the crater.
Near the lake there is a Catholic chapel dedicated to St. Anne .
History
The lake began to form about eight thousand years ago when the Chomatul volcano calmed down. At first, the lake was very swampy due to the melting of glaciers.
During antiquity and until the Middle Ages, the water level in the lake rose by 12 meters due to the abundant melting of snow and ice on the top of the volcano.
In winter, the lake freezes to a depth of one meter.
