Biography
He grew up in a prosperous and wealthy family of textile manufacturer Vasily Ivanovich Schapov .
He graduated from the Moscow Academy of Practical Sciences in one year (1863) with his older brother Peter. He was awarded a gold medal.
After the death of his father in 1864, he became a co-owner of the trading house "Brothers Peter and Ilya Schapov", being the main heir by will (the younger brother Pavel soon left the business). In 1888, he retired and acquired the estate of Aleksandrovo in Podolsky Uyezd. In Alesandrovo, Ilya Vasilyevich built a manor house, organized greenhouses and orchards; rebuilt the Church of the Assumption, attached an almshouse to it, and set the clock "with battle" on the bell tower.
For a long time there was a single. In 1892, he married a housekeeper, with whom he had previously cohabited. In the same year, a two-year parish school was opened in Aleksandrovo (currently the Shchapovskaya general education school is eleven-year-old named after Podolsky cadets), and a year later a literacy school for girls.
Member of the council, after the death of his elder brother - chairman of the Epiphany fraternity - a public organization at the Epiphany Cathedral in Elokhov. Ilya Vasilievich bequeathed 43,000 rubles to the temple.
After the death of Ilya Vasilievich, an agricultural school was opened in 1900 on the money he bequeathed to him on the estate, after the revolution it was reorganized into the Shchapovsky technical school, later the farm at the Timiryazev Agricultural Academy and the Podolsk school of livestock breeders.

In 1996, the 150th anniversary of the birth and the 100th anniversary of the death of Ilya Vasilyevich Schapov was celebrated, after whom the village was named. A monument was opened to him as a “Philanthropist and philanthropist” and a memorial service was served. August 13, 1997 the head of the Podolsky district N.P. Moskalev signed a decree on the establishment of the “Shchapovo Municipal History Museum” with the status of a legal entity. Yaroslav Nikolaevich Schapov, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, became its director.
