Biography
Member of the CCP since 1931
After the founding of the People's Republic of China at party work in Shanghai:
- 1952-1954 - fourth secretary,
- 1954-1956 - second secretary,
- 1956-1967 - First Secretary of the Shanghai City Committee of the CCP.
In 1967, he was ousted from power during the actions of the Hongweibins led by Zhang Chunqiao . He was arrested and spent most of the Cultural Revolution in solitary confinement. He repeatedly appealed from prison to Mao Zedong with a request for release, but to no avail. Ultimately, Deng Xiaoping managed to secure his release on the pretext of medical treatment, and the politician got the job as deputy chairman of the Shanghai Revolutionary Committee. Subsequently, he was the party leader of Hubei Province .
From 1982 to 1985 He was a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, secretary of the Political and Legal Commission of the CPC Central Committee. In 1983-1988 - Deputy Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.
In 1987, he became a member of the CPC Central Standing Advisory Committee.
