History
The first plans to unite Prague with the Slovak part of Czechoslovakia and with Mukachevo in particular (now Transcarpathian region of Ukraine ) appeared in the 1930s. The construction of the motorway began in the late 1930s, but nothing was built either in pre-war Czechoslovakia or in the First Slovak Republic. After the war ended, construction was frozen and resumed only in the 1960s: a new plan was developed without taking into account Transcarpathia, annexed to the USSR. In the Czech part of Czechoslovakia, construction began in 1967, in the Slovak - in 1973 (14-km section of Ivanhov – Liptovsky Mikulas in the north of Slovakia).
In 1972, construction began on the Bratislava - Senec section (D61 at that time), and in the 1970s the road was completed to Trnava (total 36 km). In 1980, the Presov - Kosice section was added, and until 1993 another 20 km to the town of Hıbe was built. The length of the motorway was 52 km in Slovakia and 224 km in the Czech Republic. In 1988, a few kilometers from Piestany , a plot D61 was built for the village of Gorna Streda with a total length of 42 km. A further 45 km were completed in 1993 to the D1 motorway and 27 km to the D61, and soon they merged into a single D1 motorway. The work stopped abruptly in 1999 by decision of the government of Mikulash Dzurinda and was resumed only in 2002.
Construction continues at the present time. It is not known for certain when the Bratislava - Kosice section will be commissioned and how exactly the Zhilina - Ruzomberok section will be completed, since in the latter case it will be necessary to dig several tunnels (including one large one at the town of Vishnev in the Zhilinsky district). The route of the plot at Presov also remains in question. The working term for the completion of construction is 2020. It is expected that there will be three-lane traffic on the Bratislava-Trnava section, two-lane on the Trnava-Michalovce section, and one-lane from Michalovce to the Slovak-Ukrainian border.
