The nuclear power plant is located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River near the city of Beckancourt in the province of Quebec , 120 km southwest of the city of Quebec .
The first reactor of the CANDU type - BWR worked in the period from 1971 to 1977. The short life is due to frequent technical malfunctions of this type of reactor. At the same time, construction was underway of a second reactor at the Gentilli station of a different type - CANDU -6, which worked from 1982 to 2012. The capacity of the first reactor was 250 MW, the second - 675 MW.
In the 1970s, it was planned to build a third reactor at the station, also of the CANDU- 6 type, however, due to a drop in demand for electricity, it was decided to abandon these plans [1] .
In August 2008, Hydro-Québec decided to upgrade power unit No. 2 as an alternative to the final shutdown of the reactor in 2011. The company planned to extend the life of the power unit until 2040, the project cost was estimated at 1.9 billion Canadian dollars. According to the initial schedule, design and construction work and equipment supplies were supposed to begin in 2008, construction and installation works - in 2011. The term for the resumption of operation of the power unit was determined in 2012. In February 2009, a contract was signed with GE Energy for the modernization of the “turbine island”.
Nevertheless, under pressure from the public after the Fukushima events of 2011 , on December 28, 2012, it was officially announced the closure of the second power unit [2] .
