Biography

Born October 11, 1944 . The son of Soviet astrophysics V. E. Stepanova [1] .

From 2000 to 2015 - Director of the Main (Pulkovo) Astronomical Observatory ( GAO RAS ). In 2011, he was elected Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Department of Physical Sciences (specialization - astronomy).

Scientific Activities

Specialist in astrophysics , radio astronomy and space plasma physics . He performed a number of pioneering works in the field of solar physics and stars. The fundamental role of conical instabilities in the dynamics and emission of energetic particles in the coronal magnetic arches ( mirror cells ) of the Sun and flare stars is shown for the first time. The cone instability of electromagnetic waves at the harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency is described in the world astrophysical literature as the “Electronic cyclotron maser”.

Works in the field of oscillations of plasma structures - magnetic arches, prominences - laid the foundation for a new, rapidly developing direction in astrophysics - coronal seismology . He made a significant contribution to the theory of Alfven-Karlkvist, based on the analogy of a solar flare with an electrical circuit.

Co-director of the leading scientific school "Multiwave astrophysical research." Deputy Chairman of the Scientific Council of the RAS on the Physics of Solar-Terrestrial Relations, member of the International Astronomical Union , represented Russia in the Bureau of the European Astronomical Society, national coordinator of the UN programs "International Heliophysical Year" and "International Space Weather Initiative", scientific coordinator of cooperation in radio astronomy RAS and the Finnish Academy of Sciences.

Awards

The A. A. Belopolsky Prize (jointly with V. V. Zaitsev , in 1999) - for the series of works “Dynamics of Energetic Particles and the Plasma Mechanism of Radio Emission Generation in the Solar Corona”
