History

The House of Soviets was planned for construction since 1944 and should be the largest public building in the city and the center of the social and political life of the region. It should have accommodated the regional committee of the CPSU , the regional executive committee , and perhaps also the city committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the city executive committee . In early 1945, the All-Union competition for the best project was announced. The House of Soviets was proposed to be located on the western side of the square, where the Volgograd Hotel and the Medical University are now located. The jury selected three projects: G. P. Goltz, N. Kolli and V. Kalinin and the chief architect of Stalingrad, V. N. Simbirtsev. In the last project, the building was not delivered where it provided for the competitive task, but on the south side of the square, thus closing the perspective of the Volga from Fallen Fighters Square. All projects were rejected, and the second stage of the competition was announced [1] .

At the second stage of the competition were presented the projects of groups of architects under the direction of N. P. Bylinkin (revised project of G. P. Golts), L. M. Polyakov and A. B. Boretsky, I. V. Zholtovsky. At this stage also the winner was not determined. And soon the decision on the location of the building changed - now it had to be in the northern (side of the tribune) part of the area [2] . The new project was made by L. Rudnev , V. Munz and L. Segal and was one of the variations of Stalin's skyscrapers. For the construction of the building, the dilapidated buildings were demolished in the 20th quarter, however, due to the death of Stalin, construction was not started. At this place was a park. In the 1970s, architects Yu. Kossovich, V. Maslyaev, A. Leshukanov, A. Savchenko, G. Kovalenko developed a new project of the House of Soviets, however, it was not implemented [3] .

In 2013, a project was built in this place a copy of the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral , destroyed in 1932 [3] . In 2016, preparations began for the construction of a new cathedral .
