Biography

Born in Genoa in 1621 , son of Pierre Francesco Grimaldi and Aurelia Lomellini Granada. Youth spent outside the Genoese borders. From historical sources it is known that he received his first public position in 1652 , when he became one of the twelve protectors of the Pammatone hospital.

He was engaged in strengthening the new republican navy. During the plague of 1656-1657 he was sent by the government to take on the duties of governor of the city of Savona . Returning to Genoa, in the following years he held various posts, including the inquisitor and ambassador to the court of Philip IV of Spain . Moreover, he became an ambassador in the delicate diplomatic situation that arose between Genoa and Spain regarding claims for the Marquis of Finale in Western Liguria. Shortly after the conclusion of peace ( 1659 ) between Spain and France, Grimaldi returned to Genoa and again entered the civil service.

He was elected doge on June 27, 1671 , becoming simultaneously king of Corsica. His reign was marked by a new regional war in the Riviera di Ponente between the republic and the Duchy of Savoy in 1672 . In parallel, a conspiracy was unveiled against the state, led by Raffaele della Torre, who, with the assistance of the Duke of Savoy, expected to raise the population of Savona and Genoa against the Doge.

June 27, 1673 completed his mandate, after which he continued to serve the Republic.

He died in Genoa in 1683 and was buried in the abbey of San Nicolo del Bosketto.

From marriage to Sylvia Lomellini had the only son Pierfranchesko.
