History
The title of Earl of Egremont was created on October 3, 1749 along with the daughter title of Baron Cockermouth in Cumberland for Algernon Seymour, 7th Duke of Somerset (1684-1750), with the right of succession for his nephews , Sir Charles Wyndham, 4th baronet from Orchard Wyndham and Percy Wyndham O'Brien (1723-1774). Algernon Seymour served in the House of Commons from Marlborough (1705-1707, 1707-1708) and Northumberland (1708-1722), served as Governor of Minorca (1737-1742) and Guernsey (1742-1750), and served as Lord Lieutenant of Sussex ( 1706-1750). The Duke of Somerset previously inherited the estates of the House of Percy , including the land of Egremont in Cumberland, from his mother, Lady Elizabeth Percy, daughter and heiress of Jocelyn Percy, 11th Earl of Northumberland . In 1750, after the death of his uncle, Sir Charles Wyndham inherited the title of 2nd Earl of Egremont. His younger brother Percy O'Brien Wyndham was created Earl Thomond in 1756 .
The title of Baronet of Wyndham from Orchard Wyndham in the county of Somerset ( Baronetry of England ) was created on December 9, 1661 for William Wyndham (1632–1683), who represented the House of Commons Somerset (1656–1658) and Taunton (1659, 1660–1679). His son, Sir Edward Wyndham, 2nd Baronet (1667–1695), represented by Ilchester in the House of Commons (1685–1687, 1689–1690, 1690–1695). His successor was his only son, Sir William Wyndham, 3rd Baronet (1687-1740), a prominent politician. He sat in parliament from Somerset (1710-1740), held the positions of kennel of hunting dogs (1711-1712) and chancellor of the treasury (1713-1714). He married Lady Catherine Seymour, daughter of Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset. His eldest son, Sir Charles Wyndham, 4th Baronet (1710-1763), in 1750 became the 2nd Earl of Egremont. He served in the House of Commons from Bridgewater (1735-1741), Appleby (1742-1747) and Taunton (1747-1750), served as Secretary of State for the Southern Department (1761-1763), Lord Lieutenant of Cumberland (1751-1759) and Lord Lt. Sussex (1763).
The eldest son and successor of the 2nd Earl of Egremont, George Wyndham, 3rd Earl of Egremont (1751-1837), was known as a philanthropist. He also sponsored the Petworth Emigration Scheme , during which thousands of workers from southern England were relocated to Upper Canada between 1832 and 1837 . After his death, the title was inherited by his nephew, George Wyndham, 4th Earl of Egremont (1785-1845). When he died in 1845 , the titles of Baron Cockermouth and Count Egremont died away. The Wyndham family estates, including the Petworth House in Sussex , were taken over by Colonel George Wyndham (1787–1869). He was the eldest illegitimate son and heir to the third Earl of Egremont. In 1859, he was elevated to the rank of peer as Baron Lyconfield . In addition, on November 27, 1963, the great-great-grandson of the latter, John Edward Reginald Wyndham (1920-1972), received the title of Baron Egremont from Petworth in Sussex . In 1967, he succeeded his father as the sixth Baron of Lyconfield.
Another prominent member of the Wyndham family was Thomas Wyndham, 1st Baron Wyndham (1681–1745), Lord Chancellor of Ireland (1726–1739). He was the son of Colonel John Wyndham and grandson of Judge Sir Wedham Wyndham (1609–1668), uncle of Sir William Wyndham, 1st Baronet of Orchard Wyndham.
