Biography

Ludwig Friedrich of Württemberg is the fifth child and second son of Duke Frederick I of Württemberg and Princess Sibylla of Anhalt .

On May 28, 1617, the elder brother Duke Johann Friedrich wrote to Ludwig Friedrich all the possessions of Württemberg on the left bank of the Rhine: Montbeliard , Reichenweyer and Horburg . Ludwig Friedrich thereby became the founder of the younger side line of Württemberg. The reign of Ludwig Friedrich was complicated by the Thirty Years War , which brought massive famine and plague . After the death of his brother Johann Friedrich on July 28, 1628, Ludwig Friedrich was appointed guardian of the 14-year-old Eberhard III in Stuttgart. As a guardian, Ludwig Friedrich became embroiled in conflict after almost a third of his land was lost by the restorative edict of Emperor Ferdinand II of Württemberg. In November 1630, Duke Ludwig Friedrich returned to sick Montbeliard, where he died on January 26, 1631.
