Tallinn Jewish School

Tallinn Jewish School is a secondary school in Estonia , the only Jewish school in the country. One of the oldest national educational institutions in Estonia, which celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2014 .

The school is located in the center of Tallinn, on Karu street 16. The school is part of the so-called “Jewish complex of Tallinn” or the “Jewish center of Tallinn”: next to the school is the Tallinn synagogue and community.

History

  • February 3, 1924 - opening of the Tallinn Jewish Gymnasium
  • 1940-1990 - the school is closed
  • September 1, 1990 - opening of the restored Tallinn Jewish School
  • According to the school, the school has 287 students and 33 teachers.

The consecration of the school, which took place on February 3, 1924, was attended by Estonian Head of State Konstantin Päts , Minister of Education and Mayor of the city.

After the Republic of Estonia joined the Soviet Union , in 1940, on the basis of the school, 7 primary and 13 secondary schools were created, where the language of instruction was Yiddish . On September 20, 1941, the Nazi authorities announced an official closure. [one]

  • A school newspaper has been published since 2007, but in 2008 it was closed.
