Foreign Policy of Northern Macedonia

The foreign policy of Northern Macedonia is the totality of relations of the former Republic of Macedonia (from February 12, 2019 the country was officially renamed the Republic of Northern Macedonia) with other states and international structures. The main objective of the foreign policy of Northern Macedonia since 2000 is membership in NATO and the EU . As a result of a dispute with Greece over the naming of the former Republic of Macedonia, the official name of the country in the UN is the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.

On February 6, 2019, a protocol was signed on the entry of Northern Macedonia into NATO .

International Recognition

 
     States that recognized the independence of the Republic of Macedonia and established diplomatic relations with it      States only recognizing the independence of the Republic of Macedonia

The Republic of Macedonia became a member of the United Nations on April 8, 1993 , eighteen months after gaining independence from the Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia . He is a member of the UN under the name The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), due to a dispute with Greece by name [1] . More than 130 UN members (including members of the Security Council - Russia, the USA, Great Britain, and the PRC) recognize the constitutional name of the country [2] .

Northern Macedonia and Austria

Relations between the former Republic of Macedonia and Austria were established on December 23, 1994 [3] . Austria has an embassy in Skopje, and Northern Macedonia has an embassy in Vienna [4] .

Austria supports the desire of Northern Macedonia for Euro-Atlantic integration [5] .

Northern Macedonia and Serbia

Bilateral relations between the former Republic of Macedonia and Serbia were established on April 8, 1996 , after the collapse of Yugoslavia. Serbia has an embassy in Skopje and a consulate in Bitola . Northern Macedonia has an embassy in Belgrade .

Northern Macedonia recognized Kosovo's independence in 2009.

Northern Macedonia and the Czech Republic

Northern Macedonia and the Czech Republic have close historical relations. The Czech Republic has a consulate in Skopje, and an embassy in Prague near Northern Macedonia. The Czech Republic was one of 131 countries that recognized the former Republic of Macedonia under its constitutional name. The Czech Republic has close economic relations with Northern Macedonia. Other areas of cooperation between the two states are education and tourism [6] [7] .

Northern Macedonia and Ukraine

Bilateral relations between the former Republic of Macedonia and Ukraine were established on July 23, 1993 , when Ukraine recognized the independence of the Republic of Macedonia. In December 1997, the Republic of Macedonia opened an embassy in Kiev , Ukraine opened an embassy in Skopje in 2001 . There are 40 existing documents between the two countries, the key documents are as follows [8] :

  • Friendship and Cooperation Agreement between Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova (12.16.1998)
  • Agreement between Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova on free trade (January 18, 2001)
  • Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Moldova on the promotion and mutual protection of investments (03/02/1998)
  • Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Macedonia on Trade and Economic Cooperation (06/03/1997)
  • Agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Moldova on military-technical cooperation (10/18/2000)
  • Agreement between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Macedonia on the conditions for mutual trips of citizens (02/06/2010)
