Schottlender's tombstone at the Old Jewish Cemetery in Wroclaw
Together with Fritz Riemann he played with Adolf Andersen in Breslau cafes. In addition to Siegbert Tarrasch and Fritz Riemann, he was considered one of the strongest chess players in Germany. Subsequently, he was called the teacher of Edward Lasker .
