Senior Lieutenant in Russia and the USSR

In the Russian Empire in 1909 - 1911 the naval rank of the IX class, and from 1912 - the VIII class. It existed only in the navy . Corresponding to the ranks of captain in the infantry, captain in the cavalry, esaul in the Cossack troops and the college assessor in the civil service. At present - the junior officer rank, standing above the lieutenant and below the captain-lieutenant (in the Navy) or captain (in the other branches of the army).

After the October Socialist Revolution was canceled. It reappeared in the Red Army in November 1935. Until January 1943, it was designated by three "kubars" on the buttonholes. Since January 1943 - three stars arranged in a triangle on the pursuit with one clearance. Saved in modern Russian Armed Forces. Corresponds to the pre-revolutionary rank of lieutenant .

Before the military rank of a soldier serving in the guards military unit on a guards ship, the word “guards” is added.

The words “justice” or “medical service” are respectively added to the military rank of a serviceman or citizen with a military specialization in law or medicine.

To the military rank of a citizen in reserve or in retirement, the words “reserve” or “retired” are respectively added.

The placement of stars on shoulder straps for the senior lieutenant of the Armed Forces of Russia is the two lower stars on two sides of the shoulder strap line and the third one above the first two on the shoulder axis line, shoulder diameter of 14 mm. The stars form an equilateral triangle with a side slightly less than 29 mm between the centers of the stars. A button is placed at the top of the shoulder strap.

Sometimes the abbreviated name "starley" is used by some [1] .

Senior Lieutenant in Germany

In the Kaiser army, Ober Lieutenant was introduced in 1871. Prior to this, the officer wearing the corresponding rank was called the Prime Lieutenant (Premierlieutenant). Since 1888, a four-pointed asterisk on shoulder straps with a white cord (around silver since 1903) wrapped around a button but not curled with a “pigtail” was used as a mark of distinction, in contrast to shoulder straps of staff officers.

USA

In the US ground forces , marines and air forces , the first lieutenant is the second rank of junior officer staff, equivalent to the Russian senior lieutenant. The military rank is between the second lieutenant and the captain. The second lieutenant is usually promoted to the first lieutenant after 18 months of service in the ground forces, and after 24 months in the air and marine corps.

The slight differences between the two lieutenant ranks are primarily in experience and different pay levels.
