Felipe Prospero

Felipe Prospero. Portrait of Velazquez , 1659, Kunsthistorisches Museum , Vienna

Felipe Prospero ( Spanish: Felipe Próspero ; November 20, 1657 , Madrid - November 1, 1661 , Madrid ) - Prince of Asturias , was the first son from the marriage of Philip IV and his second wife Marianne . His birth was met with great joy, because after the death of Balthazar Carlos in 1646, the Spanish royal house did not have an heir to the throne. He was named Felipe (Philippe) in honor of his father and Prospero ("prosperity"), as a hope for the family and the country.

Velazquez painted a portrait of Infanta Felipe Prospero when he was 2 years old. A pale face and a limp hand laid on the back of a chair emphasize the prince's poor physical condition. Hopes were not destined to come true, and Felipe died in 1661 a few days before the birth of his brother Carl, the future last king of Spain from the Habsburg dynasty , Charles II
