Biography
Born into a working-class family in Vaslua , Romania. For the first time I saw a theatrical performance in the garden of Pârjoala, where actors of the folk theater Zacharia Burenescu and I. D Ionescu played. Under this impression, Tanase and his friends created an amateur theater troupe. They staged scenes from popular performances: Meşterul Manole , Căpitanul Valter Mărăcineanu and Constantin Brâncoveanu - and a barn served as the theater.
The first professional experience as an actor Tanase received in the Yiddish theater of Mordecai Segalescu: during the performance in Vaslui, the troupe lacked an actor, and the young Tenase went on stage. In 1896, he graduated from high school . Despite the desire to become an actor, his parents sent him to a military school in Iasi , but he was soon expelled from it for poor behavior. He went to Braila , where he studied for a short time at the school of Nicholas Bălescu, but due to lack of funds he was expelled.
In Braila, he met a teacher and writer Ion Adam, who suggested that 18-year-old Tanase take his teaching position in Kureshki, Rakhova, as Adam himself went to study in Belgium . The new teacher coped with the work, but did not get along with the principal and other teachers. With the support of Adam, he got a job in Harsoveni, Poenesti, where he also taught the poet Alexander Vlahuta . Tanase had his own approach to teaching, focusing on music and gymnastics , which began to attract new students to the school. He also involved parents in the learning process, organizing trips during which he taught history and geography . Most fell in love with him, but some local lawyers did not like his methods and they secured Tanase’s dismissal.
Devoid of work, Tanase left for Bucharest . On October 14, 1899, he enrolled in the 1st Engineering Regiment. After serving in the army, he worked in the theater. In 1917 he married Virginia Niculescu.
In Bucharest in 1919, Tanas founded the theater troupe Cărăbuş. The theater worked for 20 years, during which it created the traditions of a humorous cabaret and revue in Romania, which have survived to the present. In Cărăbuş, the careers of many performers began, in particular, Maria Tanase and Horia Sherbanescu. Cărăbuş often toured Romania and traveled to Turkey at least once. Tenase himself performed in Paris .
According to at least one source, he also founded three schools for children and a church [1] .
Death
According to the official conclusion, Tanase died of tonsillitis complications on August 29, 1945 in Bucharest. According to an unofficial version, he was killed for satire on Soviet soldiers [2] .
He was buried in the Bellu cemetery in Bucharest.
